Title: BLOOD THIRSTY
Post by: Merc09 on March 07, 2013, 12:44:19 PM
So. I've decided I'm going to build my first mud truck. I'm getting a rear axle with 373 gears 241 tcase and a 350 tbi motor. I'm also getting a 4l60e trans but its blown so I think I want to just find a th350. I don't have much money. So this is not going to be the baddest truck around but it'll do for now. If anyone has some spare parts they don't want like springs or a front axle or a 350 trans. I don't care if it needs to be rebuilt. If you guys could donate to my cause that would be sweet. Thanks guys and I look forward to a great experience building this.

That's what I'm trying to do lol. But with my girlfriend in the hospital I'm only working 3 shifts a week and I'm not bringing in much money. So I want to get something together before she gets out so when she does we have a toy to play with.

How much for the roller parts bogger? What is it? And I was thinking about using a jeep with Chevy drive train make it light and fast!

the best thing you can do is buy a truck running and moving it will cost you less all the way around.

Well I have the whole drive train less the  front axle. I need a frame, body, Springs and all the little little stuff.

or s10 blazer, or rusty fullsize, or mail jeep...something that retains it value in scrap. not so much a bogger, but a 'mounds beater'

i dont really care what you build but i can tell you from my own experiences  that once you get to making what ever it is your making even the dam bolts start to cost a lot. just be truthful with your self about what you want to make. it has to be realistic to your wallet. oh ya one more thing dont go thinkin your ol lady is just going to jump right in after being in the hospital.mine wont even get in my truck
Title: Re: my first mud truck.
Post by: HellYeah4x4 on March 08, 2013, 05:21:51 AM
the drive shaft for between the trans and tcase are not cheap. Im assuming its a chevy divorce 205 passenger drop? you can swap the tailshaft housings on the trans from 2 wheel to 4 wheel. if your interested i might be able to come up with the 4 wheel adapter and a 205 or 208 mated case to trade for your divorce 205. on a side note all the lil stuff you mention adds up real quick. The last 1 i built my bill at the hardware alone was near $750. My 2 cents.... sell your extra parts and by a cheap running driving beater and have a blast, wish ya Good luck either way  ++peace

I actually don't have a tcase. I'm looking for one. If you had an adapter for a 205 that would be sweet and how much could I get it for from ya?

IMO I would try test n tune sometime before, nothing worship than wait for something that you are really looking foward to and find out you over looked something. Then you might not just run it anyway and do a lot of damage to all that hard work.

Post by: mutt truck on March 26, 2013, 09:30:15 PM
Motor and trans won't be a problem, you might have to do t case from under neath.
203 should be fine till you can get a 205, it just have as good of gear reduction as the 205. I think a 205 is just a lil bit better.
It all takes time, and of course depending on how you want to eventually build it up to, $. Eventually u find what you want and or something better and then you are back to rebuilding it again.

Nothing wrong with a 203 I ran one for years.  People don't like them but I never had any issues.    Ended up picking up 2 spares for free. Same gear ratio as 205 but chain driven instead if gear, but the chain in the 203 is a monster

I'm hoping to get my hands on a really bad a$$ truck for this project. The owner/my boss of my local paintball field might just have exactly what I want. I'm hoping he will let me work it off. I'm excited and I hope I'm able to make a deal with him. This truck I'm getting, well might be getting, I'm not going to say what it is yet but ill tell you this. It already has a set of 50% tread 37" tsl's ;D

And I'm hoping to  pic this up from work soon! ;D going to re-paint it all O.D. green with a white star on the hood with some made up numbers to make it look cool. I don't know anything about it lol. It's got a set of axles under it they almost look like rockwells but they look smaller. It would be cool if someone could help me figure out what I have here.
Thanks!  ==wgm

It's a divorced transfer case so if u made ur th350 2wd u could use it and it would be better to use. And also would retain the bigger yolkes for the driveshafts

I figured you would. Lol. It's all done in army camo and its already strait axle so I'm gunna try and get that. Maybe I can still get the np200 from that m37 but just use the blazer. It would be a lot lighter so it'll be easier on my motor and trans.

If that's the case, yeah it's gunna be a tight fit for anything aftermarket at all. Even exhaust.

I painted the headers and bolted em on. Got some starter bolts and put the starter on. I revamped the dash and made a switch box and a dash thats is a little closer for the guages. I mounted all the guages and started wiring everything up. The fuel cell is finaly secure. And i also started switching my rims around. Getting close!!! I should have it turning over in the next couple days. And running hopefully in a week or 2

I still need an alt. But i have to pull my intake off and put on lifter valley gaskets. Then i can put my dist. in and wire that up. I have to get a tac. I have to hook up the guages. Finish the wiring. Get a upper rad hose. Get oil, trans fluid, gas, and water. Hook up powersteering. And get a rear driveshaft made. Btw on my intake theres a plug right infront of the thermostat housing where i should beable to put my coolant temp switch but its corroded in to the intake. How should i get it out. It allready rounded out the 3/8 drive square in side of it. So idk what to do. Do they make a fitting i could put inline with my rad hose that the cts would screw into? I still have to yun trans lines spark plug wires. Hook up the carb. I also still need fenders and hood hinges. Theres still quite a bit to do but its all the little details lol. Oh and fordrunner i didnt leave my garage for a while. I was awake at 9:30am on tuesday and i didnt go to sleep till 2pm wednesday. Lol

Well i havent worked on it for a few days, but its back in my garage and im gunna start work on it again. I need to prime the oil pump "Im not sure how so if someone could help that would be very much appreciated.". I got torque converter bolts for it. And im headed to advantage driveline later this week to get my rear driveshaft made and my front driveshaft finished up. I got an upper rad hose and my tac is now mounted. Due date is sept 13 but itll be close but i still have 1 more bog after that thats near me this year and thats oct 20th. I really dont want to cut into my hunting time but what happens happens lol

Priming the oil system is easy. Get the tool, or an old pump shaft, and put it in a drill and spin the pump for a few mins. But make sure you got enough oil in the pan, or else it just sucks air.  Should make 60+psi oil depending on the oil pump. Mines a high volume.

The radiator is sitting in its place it just needs to be bolted in and the carb is now sealed and bolted to the intake now. Gotta hook up fuel lines and wire the starter. Run trans lines and get fluids in it along with the serpentine belt and itll be ready to fire.

Title: "BLOOD THIRSTY" UPDATE 10/11
Post by: Merc09 on November 12, 2013, 01:43:59 AM
Ive been working on this thing quite a bit lately. Its time for an update! Ive gotten the drivveshafts in. I got a dipstick and tube for the trans. I picked up a B&M ratchet shifter and got that mounted. I got an alternator and a serpentine belt. I got a plug for the outlet on the rad for a heater hose. Filled it with water to find out my intake gaskets leak so now i have to pull it apart again but when i put the intake back on its gunna be a dual plane instead of my single plane. All i need to do now is trans lines, fluids, and a little bit more wiring and this bad lad will be ready to fire!
Title: Re: BLOOD THIRSTY
Post by: Merc09 on November 18, 2013, 04:43:38 AM
so I got my intake today. I ended up getting a Holley Contender Dual Plane, and well I was over there Chevyracer hooked me up with an rv cam and a set of lifters. Thanks again Chris!
Title: Re: BLOOD THIRSTY
Post by: Jthomas on November 18, 2013, 10:36:57 PM
If they weren't the lifters that we're ran on the cam, you will have to break them in. Put it in park, turn the idle up to 2,000rpm and let it run for 20mins I think it is.  Then drop your idle, and your all set!

And if the cam and lifters were used together, then ignore everything I just said. Lol

Fenders are cut. This thing looks sick! Cant figure out why park isnt working on the trans. Its spun forward all the way but rolls like its in neutral. It does it in every position. And some how the tire on the passenger rear sticks out of the wheel well 2 or so inches more than the driver side. Dont know how that could happen either. Same width rim same width tire. Same offset. Axle is centered. Just dont get it. Would having no trans fluid in it keep it from engaging into park?

Body mounts are fine. I dont think the frame is bent? The 35's i had on it were even. The only thing i changed is the tires. Oh well. Im gunna put some 3/4 tons under it. Ill figure it out then im sure lol.
Title: Re: BLOOD THIRSTY
Post by: Jthomas on December 06, 2013, 02:46:05 PM
No trans fluid is an issue, but putting it in park is a mechanical lock, so technically you done 'need' it.
never even idle a truck in neutral or park without fluid. The pump is still spinning, then there's no lubircation.

If you have a different trans than what was originally in there (this happened to me, I went from a 700r4 to th400) the linkage rod going from the steering colloum to the trans is a different length. It didn't work at all, it bound through the selection, and if you have a body lift this will also be a problem. Disconect the linkage at the trans, jack up the rear of the truck, and cycle through the gears by hand, if problem still there, then you know you have a trans issue.
Title: Re: BLOOD THIRSTY
Post by: Jthomas on December 06, 2013, 02:48:09 PM
Btw. If you do jack up the rear, make sure your not alone so somthing bad doesn't happen and you don't run yourself over. loll

Title: Re: BLOOD THIRSTY
Post by: Merc09 on December 06, 2013, 03:56:35 PM
I have a cable shifter now, but i think i got a trans issue. ive tried cycling all the gears by hand and every gear i put it in i can still push the truck.
Title: Re: BLOOD THIRSTY
Post by: Jthomas on December 06, 2013, 05:10:19 PM
Sometimes low tranny fluid could do that. Or your just pump isn't building any pressure. A new remanufactured pump goes for$100. It's something you could replace yourself.  But will involve dropping the trans.  But that's just one a the many things it could be
Title: Re: BLOOD THIRSTY
Post by: betterbeaters on December 06, 2013, 06:09:30 PM
you should be able to push the truck in every gear but park with it not running sound like the park pin is broken and thats no biggy its like having a stick shift just park on flat ground lol
Title: Re: BLOOD THIRSTY
Post by: charlie on December 07, 2013, 01:11:31 AM
Is the tire sticking out a new problem?  If so first make sure the axle shaft isn't coming out. This could make it seem like park isn't working.
