MileMarker E9000 on the Jeep...............yet to put it to real use yet. Was going to use it at the Mounds to pull out another Jeep but he had no tow points on the front and wanted me to "tie" it around his bumper ends......................no thanks.

smart move. winch cables should not be wrapped around something and hooked back on themselves unless there is no other way. I think it decreases the strength of the cable, or puts stress on it.

It should never be done regardless, that will kink the cable and cause a weak point....there is always another way, even if it means coming back later with the right equipment....but anyone with a winch should also carry a short strap (4 feet or so, often called a tree saver)

If you dont have the right equipment with you, ask other people around to borrow something, most will have no problem with it....if there is nobody else around, then go get the right equipment and come back....much better to leave a vehicle overnight then to hurt or kill yourslef or someone else

Eroq

I definately agree with Bill on this, if you cant do it safely, leave it. Its not worth hurting yourself or someone else over a vehicle.

comealongs are great to have too if you cant afford a power winch (electric, hydraulic, PTO, or even wife powered ;))

i picked up a 4 ton comealong for $40, used it once and it payed for itself. I know TSC has some larger ones but they are around $100 or so.

Yes "tying" a winch cable on to a bumper is an idea from someone who has no idea what they are talking about.  He then offered to have me use his towstrap, nice new one with hooks on both ends (eeek), to try to "yank" him a few times............I told him that it was better to be pulled out the way he came in---becasue he might break his tie rod in the "pulling" process.   It worked he conviced someone to put him out that way.
Here is a picture of his stuck:

looks good. did you unwrap the cable and re wrap it with tension? if you don't you will probably damage your cable when you put weight on it.

just pull your jeep across the yard with the brake on part way. keep an eye on the temp of your motor. put your hand on the outside if it starts to get hot just stop for a few minutes.

Yes you should definately do this, as long as you have your cable out it's not a bad idea to lightly grease it also.

My cousin has a winch that is actually a converted chainsaw. Don't know exactly how it works but the winch reel and whatnot replaced the cutting bar. Anybody else ever seen a setup like this? He swears by his.

yes neat little machine, but not a huge weight rating. I think it is meant for utility things.
