Winter changes things, that jeep never even budged on the first 2 attempts.
1. strap size,  was that a 2 or 3" strap
2. how many winches did you see? I saw at least 2
3. hi-lift jack never left the back of the truck
4. had he hooked the strap short it would have lifted UP on the stuck jeep
5. why was the strap hooked to the high side of the jeep??
6. he was CHOPPING the ice away - HMMmm, that should have been the 1st clue
7. pulling the wrecker with the knot in the strap, apparently the first strap breaking did'nt teach anybody anything.

I agree it took me a moment to realize they actually tied a strap in a knot. Just about the perfect exapmle of what not to do

some times you can use a winch to lift the back of the vehicle straight up if the bumper is high enough and the roller fairleads are strong enough.
you can use a strap or a winch to lift if you use a A frame.

I would like to clarify a couple of things and point out a couple of more

1. My comments above where not intended as a personel attack on anyone, they were intended to point out the mistakes that where made.

2. I have watched this video several times and have noticed a couple of other issues that should be pointed out

    A. I can not tell if there were pull points on the stuck unit so I have to assume that 1 of 2 things happened
        a. weak/insufficient pull point failure - if this was the case there was probably a chunk of steel on the end of the strap, notice the severe damage to the S10's tailgate before it went through the window
        b. strap failure from wrapping around the jeeps structure - if this were the case then the STRAP ALONE caused this damaged

    B. notice the guy in blue standing next to the strap as the S10 attempted to pull the wrecker up the hill, this is AFTER the 1st strap broke

    C. With the length of the strap and the curvature of the trail the S10 was attempting to pull the stuck jeep straight back, due to the depth of the stuck there is absoultely no way this was going to happen, the stuck jeeps tires are being pulled straight into the ice above the center of rotation in essence pushing the jeep down. even with chopping the ice (they probably couldnt chop out behind the steer tire) the stuck jeep needed to be pulled UP as well as Back.  Had they used the Hi-Lift jack and lifted the jeep up, filled under the tires and then pulled, I believe they could have been successful in the recovery.

    D. there were a couple of vehicles with some $$ in them, so I assume there was some "Experience" standing around yet these mistakes went on.

This was a seriously Deadly situation, every one should watch this video and learn from it...
I did notice 1 positive aspect - can anyone point it out?

actually it was when they used the other HEEP with the winch to pull it from the front (should have in the first place)... they put a coat over the cable

also a good sales video for a headache rack. i know im integrating one on my 88 for just that reason. very lucky he didnt get hurt. pretty much everything was pointed out above so i have noting else to add.

edit. with all those vehicles at the end multiple vehicles strapped to the wreker would have prolly made it easier to get it up and put less stress on the straps and vehicles. or using the winches on the wrecker to pull it up the hill backwards if it had some back there strong enough.

Towstrap has expanded metal on the inside of his back window in "Blue". the glass will braek, but the expanded metal should stop whatever is coming through.

I know Gary. He is an awesome wheeler. I remember hearing about that day. I don't know why he would still try and get him out with those kinds of hook points. I also know that gary didnt even have 4 wheel drive, thats why he backed up so far back to snatch him. but everyone make mistakes Im glad no one was hurt

You know just because you see money in trucks dont mean theres "Experience" because i see alot of money in trucks and stupidty in the drivers.  What my point is dont judge a book by its cover.
