THIS HAPPEND AT BETTERBEATERS BDAY BOG.

THE GUY IN THE WHITE FORD HAD A WINCH, BUT DECIDED TO USE A STRAP THE WRONG WAY, ALSO THE GUY THAT WAS BEING YANKED OUT WAS IN THE WRONG TOO BUT I THINK THAT THAT SPOT WAS THE ONLY SPOT THAT HE HAD, BECAUSE HE USED THE FACTORY TOW HOOKS, AND THATS WHAT WENT INTO THE HEADLIGHT.

SO WITH ALL THAT SAID IF YOU GOT A WINCH
USE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stock chevy tow hooks look beafy enough, but in reality they are very weak and have a habit of breaking or straightening out and therefore should not be used for recovery...

Why was the guy in the Ford pulling in reverse? I know that sometimes its your only option but he had plenty of room and a hitch to hook it up to the rear of his truck. It's a lot safer that way so if something does break it will most likley hit the bumper or tailgate, not the winshield or your face! I bet next time he'll use the winch.

betterbeaters

he is a moron!!! he was trying to show off and be cool so he did it in reverse. he has played 4-5 times since then and never used it. my buddy know him. he wont be back at our boggs!

It should have never happened the guy in the ford tryed to yank the chevy out when he could have easily just pulled the chevy wasn't stuck that bad and the ford was on dry ground. that being said the reason the tow hook came off was when they put the body lift in the chevy they put longer bolts and spacer tubes in between the tow hooks and the frame. The chevy had backed in to try and pull me out and got stuck so they were gonna get him out and then work on getting me out. nedless to say after that incident I got my jeep out and straped it to a tree and pulled my chevy out that way.

And for those wondering YES I told the guy in the chevy what he should do to make the tow hooks safer

This incident just goes to show you why you should ALWAYS fasten your recovery points flat against the frame DON'T ever put a spacer inbetween the recovery point and the frame and have the proper mounting hardware.

Its better to have a gun and not need it, then to need a gun and not have one

Please don't get defensive by the questions I don't want to start any BS or offend anyone, I only ask because I was not there and I'm trying to understand the whole story.

I have to ask the question:  Why was this allowed to happen?
                                             Why did'nt anyone stop him?

there seems to be several people around that understood the issue (pulling backwards/ faulty recovery points etc...)
OK, so the guy was an a**, he was still allowed to hook up the way he did.   He was definately outnumbered and I believe there were enough people there with enough attitude to step up and say no.

You bring up a good point hammerlane

It was a combination of many things that caused it a couple of which were:

1. no one expected the guy in the ford to jerk as hard as he did, all he had to do is pull he didn't even need to jerk

2. no one inspected recovery points so we didn't realize how the guy with the chevy had his tow hooks atatched

when I say "no one" I mean no one that goes for everyone that was the me included

I don't remember if we already said but I'll tell a little about what lead up to this:

I went in and got stuck, the green chevy backed in to hook up to me and wasn't able to just pull so he backed up to give me a tug and when he did he slid into the ruts that he was stradeling and wasn't able to move. so the guy in the ford offered to pull him out, they got hooked up and instead of getting all the slack out and trying to pull like he should have done he just put his foot down and well he was on dry gound and was able to get up speed and you see the result. Nobody was expecting him to do that there was no need for it, so how do you stop something you don't know is going to happen? You can't all you can do is deal with it.

I hope that helps you understand a little more about what happened hammerlane  ==shrug

Hammerlane

Yea, I can appreciate the not knowing what someone might do, thats unfortunate.

seems if he had a winch he could have pulled both trucks out at the same time with the use of a block and a strap.

Kinda like pounding a nail with a screwdriver.....
had the tools, does'nt know how to apply them, makes for a dangerous situation. ==doh
