I would say this would be a good idea for a lot of people. I have seen older men get a atv and didnt know how to handle it and he was hurt pretty bad. thanks Chetney for the info

MidMichiganMudRun

Yea a very good idea for some people.... a lot of people think they can ride but some really need pointers

Bigdaddy

guy that does the training is BigWop on this site, Very nice guy
Free your mind...and your ass will follow!

NEVER ARGUE WITH AN IDIOT, THEY'LL BRING YOU DOWN TO THEIR LEVEL AND BEAT YOU WITH EXPERIENCE!!

TopWop

Thanks BIGDADDY for the kind words. I see you GOTMUD guys all the time while riding my 800 Can Am ATV at the Mounds. Im going to STOP being a stranger in here and will stop in and say HI a few times a week.

If you guys have any legal questions about your sport, I'll be glad to help out any way I can. I've been around the legal aspect of this sport for MANY years. Now as far as the DNR safety classes are concerned? If you care about the SAFETY of your sport and your KIDS safety,Stay as far AWAY from ANY ORV safety instructor that was hired thru the DNR, these guys are NOT TRAINED INSTRUCTORS and are hired on the mere fact that they wear a LAW Enforcement Badge of SOME type, I have PROVEN this MANY times over to the DNR. I even had a Sheriff from Barry County call my office in late April of 2007 and tell me that he was licensed thru the DNR to teach ORV safety classes, but had NO IDEA on WHAT or HOW to teach because the DNR hired him with NO TRAINING at all.I helped the officer out and complained DEARLY to the DNR about the over 500 Instructors they hired to do ORV safety classes with NO training. Do your home work when seeking out a ORV safety Instructor, for your KIDS sake.

Sincerely,

hey does anybody have a helmet they need to get rid of i need one to get rid one.

TopWop

If your going to be riding an ATV or dirtbike, take your helmet SERIUOSLY and dont just settle for ANY old helmet. Helmets are designed to protect your head in the event of an impact or crash. Helmets have a life span of ONE impact accident and should not be used after that. Helmets that are older than 4-5 years old should be thrown away and upgraded for the newer/lighter composite helmets that have better fitting and protection coverage.

Your taking a ''test'' to become a educated DNR officer?

Or do you mean that your going through the DNR Academy to ''hopefully'' become a educated DNR officer? Last I knew, the DNR was laying off officers because of budget cuts, but hey, if you get the chance to go, go!

Either way, im not intimidated in the least bit. In all my years of teaching ORV safety classes, I've not found one single law enforcement officer who had more knowledge than myself when speaking in terms of ORV laws. Im very confident that a new Law Enforcement Officer would not either. You simple cannot compile all the years of information I have regarding ORVs laws, by just taking some law enforcement academy.

Actually, truth be known, I've actually trained and certified some kids who's fathers were Police officers.

Good luck at the Academy!

How much are these classes?
Depends on who you take the classes from and if they are running the program on Grant Dollars or not. It can run from $ 25.00 up to $ 125.00.  Some classes are free, but be wary of free classes. You know what it usually means when something is offered for free.

when I sold atvs back in early 2000's they offered the customer $50 to attend a safety class. I also recieved this when i bought a pair for myself in 06. Who is teaching these classes? I went to it with my wife because she really needed it but I didnt see anyone learning a whole lot in the few hours the class was held
Web Wheelin' for sure

You are referring to safety classes taught by ASI [ ATV Safety Institute ] All the major manufactures participate in this free safety program, I know, I taught it for years until about 2006 or so. To qualify for free training and get the monetary $$ you mentioned , you MUST meet certain AGE/CC requirements for the ATV you just purchased or you do not qualify. These requirements are as follows

*Ages 6-11yrs old-NOT OVER 69cc
AGES 12-15 yrs old-NOT MORE THAN 90cc

You MUST have bought a new ATV, and if the above AGE/CC requirements are not meet,
than your youth cannot receive free training. 95% of parents do NOT purchases ATVs within the above manufactures AGE/CC recommendations, therefore, their youth does not qualify for the free safety classes and must therefore go thru a State program like the one I offer. The free ASI program is OK for adults, but it does very little for youth under the age of 16, who need it the most. And the ASI program REALLY lacks when it comes to discussing LOCAL STATE LAWS. One of the reasons I got out of that program. You can contact my office @ 810-249-0398 and I'd be happy to spend some time on the phone with you if you need further information regarding these safety classes.
