i had to replace the alternator on my truck today and when i started it i noticed that its blowing a lot of smoke from the left bank. its blueish smoke so that tells me its oil. just curious, since im not a huge motor guy, what are some things that could cause this? i have a few ideas floating around in my head, just wanna hear some input.

Squirell

could be a plugged oil return in the head and it is makin your valve seals leak
I had the full size thing it just bored me!!!

The only people you need in your life are the ones who prove they need you in theirs

Its all fun and games till someone gets knocked up, down or out

Hammerlane

its obviosly oil in the cylinder, how is the question..

compression check will narrow it down, do a dry test first, record your readings for each cyl.
then do a wet test.. squirt a little oil in each cyl and re-record your readings, if compression improves you have rings/piston issue. if it does not it would be gasket/head/valve issue. good place to start.

don't buy the cheap umbrellas either. they are not worth a p00. get viton or teflan seals. they are a little more expensive, but they work alot better

well man id stick with the stock umbrella type with the way you have the motor. but thats up to you. but like i said on the phone i really would bet seal or slow valve malfunction consediring its smoking from only the driverside exhust pipe and not both. and that nice oil smoke you said you see is a good start. if i was you i would pull the head, check the valve, valve spring, valve seal, and then flip that bytch over and check the valve seat while you have the head off. better be safe than sorry.
