im getting a custom made wood stove for my garage. as long as the guy still has it when i go to get it atleast. anyways, its made with 2 55 gallon drums and has the conversion kit to make it all one and so on. my question is, ive never installed one, i know i need to fireproof the walls and make sure i have atleast 5 feet from any wall. what do i need to fire proof the walls with and what is the legal way to run the chimney. i dont have a lot of carpentry experience and what i do have, im not good with so i might be intrested in paying someone to do this for me. thanks for any information....

you can't put one in a garage code wise. your insureance may not cover you if have one in the garage. now with that said here is how we done our's. 5/8ths dry wall 8' each way(all ours are corner installs) and on the celing above the stove. black single wall pipe to a adapter calor(sp) at the celing double wall stainless from the celing through the roof to the cap. you will want to be at least a foot above the peak for good drafting. 6" min for pipe, but you might want 8". my burn box is 24"x24"x36"dp and I need every bit of the 8" pipe for flow. keep your bends to a min and line the bottem of the stove with fire brick and get a temp gage for the chimney so you dont overfire the stove. my stove is set at a 45 deg angle to the 2 walls with the back 18" from the walls . ive been running it this way for 8 years. hope this helps.

the way my friends uncle did it was built a lil shed 6 ft from his garage, insulated the hell outa it put the wood stove in there, n had a blower that sent the heat into the garage.

i believe your penetration through the roof has to be triple wall pipe!not double wall! and a min. of 6" clearance from any combustible ! hope this helps

never hurd about the triple walll thing might want to look in to that. but i agree with blazen trout if you go with 5/8 dry wall and stay at least 16" away from the walls you sue be all right . i would deftly go  with 8" pipe i got 6" on my house wich is only 12"x16"x24" fire box and 6" semmes to just right

code says you need triple wall. tsc sells all the stuff you need. the reason why everyone puts in single wall is that a 2 foot piece of triple wall is like 80 bucks. cost ya like 1000 to do it right. i got a small stove in my house, and i used single wall. like stated before check with the insurance company

my neighbor just bought a 55gal drum and made his own woodstove. it took him about 25 min to build it and i think he said he paid a total of like $70 for the drum and the conversion kit.... check out your local scrap yard for cheap drums, deerfield charged him $5 for one... and i see them on the side of the road all the time for like 150, 175....
