ok so i'm rebuilding my motor for the tracker. i'm gonna run 5w30 for breakin but after that i was wondering what you all think i should run for weight. I know a guy that says he runs 20w50 in this tracker and runs 6-7000 rpms all day long. do you all think that would be ok i dont plan to run that high rpms but might get up there once and awhile. i just dont want to break the motor. dont want to have to do this again. thanks for all the info in advance.

I run Mobile1 10W30 synthetic in my tracker engine. 20w50 is a heavier weight which is good when you run ballsout all the time. It does'nt thin out as much from heat and friction. It would be better in the summer time, but in the winter it would start harder.

so your saying 20w50 would be a good idea this summer after i break the motor in.

5w30 in the winter and 10w40 in the summer...been doing it for years. You want that 5w for cold starts in the winter and you want that 40w protection in the summer, however 20w50 even in the summer is a thick oil for startup! So with 10w40 you get the best of both worlds 10w startup and 40w once it gets hot.

Yes if you want to use 20w50 go ahead, but I would recommend only using it June-sept.

Most manufacturers run 5w30 year round.  I personally would recommend a Rotella 15w40 for a high quality oil that will function well when you are beating the poo out of your tracker.

I have never used a break in oil in my life.  I've always used whatever weight I was going to run in the motor as the break in oil.  I do change the oil and filter after about 100 miles to get the initial run of garbage out of the motor.  I like Rotella T because it is a very high quality oil and is better for engines running a flat tappet on their cams.

Years ago when alloys used in engine construction (like rings) were of lower quality (along with engine oils for that matter), Engine break in was critical.  Today with modern lubricants and better materials of construction, break in time is almost non-existant.  When I build a stock motor the only thing I do for the break in is a one shot high load acceleration to "set" the rings.  After that I drive the engine in a normal manner.
