I've got a 92 F150 with the 5.0 efi in it. i fryed the trans so i put the 5 speed out of 2wd in it and now the the damn thing sounds like its running on 5 or 6  cylinders, I'm at wits end. ive tryed changing the heads checking all the vacuum lines, put a new fuel filter on, changed plugs and wires, cleaned the cap and rotor, changed ignition coil, but still no change. if anyone could help it would be greatly appreacheated. I'm about ready to yank the motor out and and go buy another one to put in, this would be the 6th one ive had to put in this damn thing. thanks Jonesey.

make sure the firing order is right!!!!! i swapped engines on my 1990 f150 5.0 and the newer engines have a different firing order, it will run on 4 , but miss on 4

i didn't  read  sparkplugs,        if it was auto  see if  you  need a  jumper  in there  for the  brain box to work right  ==dunno

check your grounds.

if it aint the firing order it is 1 of 2 things.......pickup coil, or the module on the side of the distributor.

Plugs gapped wrong? Most likely firing order, bud has 300 in his. Took off all wires at once, sounding really bad when you revved it up. But sounding ok at idle. What's it sound like, buh buh buh buh buh buh buh buh      it will scip one of those buh's if it's missing. Learned that from my dad lol.

i've checked and double checked the firing order. and where would i need to put a jumper wire in, and what for? at idle it doesn't sound bad but, when i pop the hood and look at the engine, the hole damn thing shaking...

did you check your lifters when you had the heads off? collapsed lifter? bent push rod? if youve checked all the electrical things its time to start lookin into the mechanical end of it.....also check your injectors try finding the cylinder that is running cold and swap the injector with one of the good ones, if thats not the problem its internal mechanical

Like the entire engine? If that's the case, maybe a REALLY bad motor mount, worth a look.

a bad motor mount wouldnt cause it to run like crap..but like lilwagon was saying its possible that i bent a couple pushrods or collapsed a lifter or two...

This was my first thought also! Computer could be looking for the signal from the auto trans...it does not see it so it does not know how to run.

Jonesey

It Had The AOD Transmisson in it, the only electrical plug there was, was for the neutral safety switch. and i have a 300 inline 6 but idont want to have to change motor mounts and swap computers.

But it would cause it to shake would it not? I didn't suggest that to be the problem that it's running bad, only to the shaking.

if  its  fuel injected,   you  could have a  bad injector.

unplug  one  wire  at a time.  and  see  witch ones  not  working.

true, but i put new motor mounts in when this motor went in. i didnt check that i made sure that all the injectors were plugged in, ill have to check that when i get the starter fixed and back in, one of the ears broke off because of a loose starter bolt.
