I have a old allstar 220v mig/wire welder that I can not get any penitration with not even with the heat turned all the way up.
Any one know anything about welders and what to do to fix my problem.  Thax   Gary

Check your 220 at the control box. you might have one leg not working. or something is wrong with the welder.

you should be able to find some wiring schematics for it online somewhere... do a google search, i'm sure you can find someone with a similar problem who's fixed it before

Ditto on the one leg...also check for any fuses inside the welder that could blow causing it to lose a leg.

I'll have to check in side the welder because I run my arc welder on the same plug and I can weld all day.   Thanx for the input and if you think of somthing else it could be please let he know.

Another thing to check is the connection on your ground cable where it attaches to your welder....take it off and clean it up with a wire brush and reinstall. They can get corroded just like a car battery connection.

I'll check that to thanks

When welding on heavier gauge metals it is always best to bevel the edges of the seam.  When needing penetration with a mig it is better to push the the molten puddle than pull it.  Another choice is to go with flux core wire,  flux core by nature will penetrate deeper.  The flux core is not as clean and pretty,  in fact it drives me nuts. It spatters like a stick welder.  Your travel speed may be to fast also,  not allowing the puddle to sink deeper.  I like to run .035.  You can practice turn wire speed down slow your travel speed down.  Take band saw or hack saw and cut across the weld to check the penetration  and you progress.  Get yourself a note book and keep track of your setting, changes to wire speed and amps, travel speed, metal thickness, pushing or pulling, up hill or down hill.  This reference will help you to be a better welder.  What is your wire Dia.?  I like to use .o35 Dia..  Let me know if I can help.
