Is there anything I can put in front of the radiator that will keep the mud from caking in the radiator and overheating the engine ??? but still let the air thru to cool the antifreeze or water.  which brings me to my next ??? what do you guys run in you boggers in the summer antifreeze or water ??? Is there anyplace that prohibits antifreeze being run in a truck ???

In the summer I run water only in my Trans Am, 3rd gen TA's and Camaro's are notorious for running hot by design. I run just water with purple ice and it stays nice and cool 190 degrees...if I run antifreeze and water combo 50/50 it will creep up to 220 in traffic. As far as keeping mud out of the radiator I see a lot of people using big mud flaps on the front of their rigs....just look at the pics on this site and you will see one.

Mud flaps from the bottom of the core support to the ground. That's what we always used. As for the coolant vs. water issue. My S-10 never had a drop of anti-freeze in it, just water. I run 50/50 mix now in everything but if I was doing it in a straight mudder, I wouldn't be afraid to run only water. Your parts will corrode faster but it's a toy so it probably won't matter much.

The only problem with running straight water is that the water will boil over a lot faster, then with a lil anti freeze in it.....

50/50  or even 70/30            raises boiling point       never heard of purple ice          pm some info thxs
why so much mud up front   dont follow so close           use mud flaps  heavy         i use rubber roofing
down from rad and both fender wells     it blocks the holes   and forces the rad to suck the air  and always
use a rad. shroud       to help direct it     2 cents

Purple ice...same as water wetter! It lowers the surface tension of the water and allows it to have more contact with your radiator to absorb more heat. http://www.royalpurple.com/faqs-purple-ice.html

thanks for the posts guys I knew about the rubber from the core support down I was just wondering if someone put screen or something between the grill and radiator   thanks

I run 50/50 and a 22lb radiator cap, raises boiling point.  But you gotta make sure you got good radiator hoses, extra pressure puts more stress on em, I double clamp mine too.

Yeah a big difference is in the cap. For each pound per square inch of pressure the cap is rated, it raises the boiling point like 6-8 degrees or so. A 15 lb cap (which is pretty much standard now) can raise the boiling point up another 120 degrees.....

Thats why you never open hot also; all of a sudden there is no pressure in the system and you have a surge boil coming at you.

been there done that not fun.     that when I was young and didn't care.  learned quick

I used an aluminum screen from home depot, it comes in a roll. I put it on the outside of the grill, and used fender washers to hold it down. It reduced the mud in the radiator a bit, and it's cheap protection from taking a rock into your radiator.

My new truck has a rear mounted radiator, it's well worth the effort!

the screen is a good Idea     I dont want to run a rear rad. 1 because my kids will be with me most of the time and 2 I have a 79 bronco.  but I do see alot of guys putting the radiators in the back of their trucks.
