I have a 1996 Oldsmobile cutlass supreme 3.1 V6 and it has had a problem i am trying to sell it but i need to fix it before i do. About a week a go i was driving it and it worked fine but all of a sudden the rpms go crazy and it stalls. SO i cleaned the mass air flow sensor and tryed it again and it worked fine for the next few days but then it started to do it again cleaned it off the mass air flow sensor and drove it but didnt work this time rpms just went crazy again. It only does it when it is driving doesnt really need to be warm because it did it not even 1/2 mile one time but i also went as far as detroit. It can just sit there and run all day and it wont stll though. I have changed the crankshaft sensor, the knock sensor, fuel filter, mass air flow sensor, pcv valve, spark plugs, spark plug wires, and had the ignition control module tested and it is fine. I dont know what to do anymore i need some ideas...
Theres no such thing as you cant fix it, it just means you need a bigger hammer

did you clean the idle air control motor? that can and more then likely will cause your problem. incase you don't know where it is look at the throttle body and look for a round piece with a plug in the back. it's attached with 2 screws pull it out and spray it and the throttle body with carb cleaner. reinstall and try.

do you mean the idle air control sensor if so i cleaned that i dont think there is a idle ari control motor

are you still running DEX COOL? the orange coolant from the factory ???

silversport

i never have used that stuff and never will that coolant is nothing but trouble. And i dont know if the engine that was put in there had the intake mainfold done on it or not

I dont know if this makes a difference but it will usually start right up after it stalls with no problem.

it's not a sensor it's a control motor which is an output from the computer. if it goes bad it will stick and the computer will over compensate for idle speed and will cause excessive rpm and then stalling. the reason it will restart is it has enough time to correct itself during the off period. replace the motor and see if that fixes your problem. seeing as how i doubt you would have access to a GM Tech 2 computer to see IAC counts there is no way for you to know if that motor is working properly. so i'd just replace it

I replaced the idle air control motor and did not make a difference. it still did it.

If you are saying the RPMs are going crazy on the tach but the motor is just stalling or running poorly I would say you have a crankshaft position sensor issue or bad ignition control module.

If you can't figure it out I would be happy to look at it at my shop in Auburn for a modest fee.  Just PM me and I will give you my contact info.

Not saying that it wouldnt be a bad idea but i have never taken one of my cars to the shop and i aint going to start with this one. I already changed the crankshaft position sensor and had the ignition control module tested and it is good

There is also a code on there that i just found it is

Look at all the money your saving by throwing parts at it.
