I had a 98 Tahoe that when you backed it up I would here the same thing.  It took us a while to figure out that it was a U-Joint on the rear drive shaft.   It actually wore on the cap funny to the point that it elongated the inside of the cap and had almost no bearings where it would make that noise.    You need to look at all the caps to see if there is possibly a gap where the journal goes into the cap.  It almost wore a hole into the side of the cap.  Hope this helps

I've experienced that noise from time to time with a couple different 4X4 trucks. In all of the trucks at one point it came down to replacing the axle joints. When turning, the axle joints would bind up when they are really worn out. They were so worn out in my 2001 Ram Off Road that they began to click going straight! It's like a crunching click noise right? I would definitely check them out. It's a  p00 job taking the entire front end apart to replace them...and watch the axle seals when you put them back in! You can easily damage a seal and they will begin to leak out. That's what I think it is. You might be able to get a pry bar on the joints and do some wiggling to see if there is any slop in them.  Good luck.
Didn't bring your truck widjadija? Hook it up like a tow truck!!

Names mater....like to'mater without the "ta"

ya i took my pry bar and the u-joints in the axle are solid. there very strong and have no slop. im still stumped so im gonna lift the front of the truck up and start slowly tearing both sides down and go threw every part till i find whats wrong. i do know the front drive shaft u-joints are shot but  not the problem cause when im in 2wd the front drive shaft dosnt move.

check n see make sure ur steering box isnt loose.. jack up the front end and start shakin stuff.. somethings gotta be loose..    my dodge was doing that, but that was cuz the auto lockouts were tryin to engage, and i had a bad upper ball joint.
