I know you guys always say to use a screw in shackle, But.........
I have this shackle

and was wondering if I took the pin out and replaced it with a 7/8" grade 8 bolt if that would be just as safe as a screw in type shackle.

                    Thanks  Gary

I would have to say no.. due to the fact that a bolt is designed to be pulled lenghtwise with constant force
applying it to that shackle would apply latteral force against the center of the bolt using a shock load.. if it bends there is no getting it out.  grade 8 is also a hardend bolt.. in an unusual twist, that makes it weaker (brittle) against a shock load.

screw pin shackles are not that expensive.. a 1" screw type clevis is only about  $15 - 30..

I agree with Hammerlane. Way to many different forces working against you. I have seen these things fly and thankfully
never hit anyone(yet). You can't call it back once its flying on a strap. Just don't think its worth the chance.
Personally I never hook to a pin through clevis.
Show me the MUD!!!
