I have a chevy 350 thats going to be going to the machine shop soon. And want to know if dome pistons will fit under stock 2.02 heads. I can get a set of .30 over domes for a 350 for 100 bucks with reconditioned rods on them

mudseeker

guess it would depend on your max valve lift and what CC dome they are.

J.C.

call the machine shop. they would know. i hope...

yeah it's a lot more complicated than just the valve sizes, chamber size, dome size, valve lift AND duration can't really be answered without looking very close to your parts, i'd talk to your machine shop, they have all your parts? they'd tell ya if they'll fit, if their not sure you might wana go somewhere else my 2 cents anyways

you may need to run race gas or premium if your comp. ratio is high.  if your driving this on the street whats wrong with some flat tops, then you probably dont have to worry about the piston and the valves meeting eachother, which isnt a good thing.

no matter what the machine shop says, if theres even a shadow of a doubt in your mind use some silly putty and rotate the engine with the heads sitting on it and manually check valve clearance!! all might look good on paper till you find out you have a block or heads that have been decked a couple times  ==pissed , had what i thought was a spark knock at high rpm on a 6 inch rod flat top motor, after it blew up (1 night of racing oval) we found all the pistons had little smiley dents on them

Ill talk to my machine shop. And the truck is not going to be on the road. So if i have to high race gas or even like 93 that would be fine

Thats what ill do. Ill get some silly putty and try that before the motor goes to the machine shop with one of the pistons in the block. So that way ill know what pistons to use

might go without saying but you cant just put one of the pistons in you need the crank. and the cam to open the valves to there highest point then rotate the piston up with the crank. if it goes all the way thru the stroke, pull the head and measre the thickness of the putty, playdough, chewing gum whatever. if i remember correctly you want at least .040 clearance to accomodate for valve float at higher rpm

this is something you should talk to your machine shop.. cause you give us no info! we cant answer your questions with out all the info and most of us dont build motors for a living so ask someone who does before you get wrong info here and blow you new motor up!
