I have a dell inspiron 531 desk top that I need to run the restore discs on, I have the 3 discs that came with the computer one is titled  "device drivers" for reinstalling dell inspiron 531/531s desktop computer software for windows xp, the second is titled "drivers and utilities" for reinstalling dell inspiron 531/531s computer software, the third is titled "application" for reinstalling cyberlink power dvd dx 7.0 software for dvd play back, my question is will it reinstall windows xp or do I also need a xp recovery disc? the reason I need to run the restore discs is because of a virus that was on the computer, I was able to remove the virus but now I cant get online with the computer and get an error message that the ethernet card is not installed, but when I go to device manager and check the status of the ethernet card it says it is working properly, so the only thing I can figure is to restore, I do have the xp product key number from the desk top, if it will be needed and I have backed up everything important to me on an external hard drive.

Did you get this figured out.  Sounds like you dont have the xp disk.  You have everything else.

hey thanks for the reply, no still not figured out,  I have found that the discs I have are just drivers, the problem I am having is with my ethernet card (I think) , I tried at one point to reinstall the program for my internet service after removing the viruses I had because I was having problems connecting and got an error message that my ethernet card was not installed  so I went to device manager and checked the ethernet card and it says that it is working properly, I tried to reinstall the drivers for the ethernet card from one of the discs I have and it seemed to work but I still can not connect with my desk top, tonight I tried to reinstall the program for my internet service and got a popup from my antivirus program that said I had a trojan horse virus and worm virus
(two different virus)
and they were located in file "D" which is my dvd drive , I removed the disc for my internet program and the message went away, I ran a scan of file "D" and no virus detected , so it seems that the virus is on that disc?????
now im really confused, next plan is to contact my internet provider and see what they say,
I also right clicked on my network connection and clicked repair and it said it could not renew my IP address, the last time I talked to my internet provider they could not detect my IP address when they tried to connect to my computer?????
again thank you for your reply and  if you have any other suggestions
