what yall think about the 6.9l diesel in the 80s fords?

Well my new trucks got a 6.9l...who all owns one and how do you like them? My truck in damn good shape for an 86, its from iowa and it has never been drivin in michigan got towed in on a lowboy, injectors leak like a sob, gonna fix them and new batts and a glowplug solinoid, some light bulbs and ill be drivin it...hopefully soon! Ill get some pics of it

they were ok i have drove sevral on farms i worked for but the power was nothing close to the 7.3  when towing hay trailers or horse trailers. how many miles are on it? the last one i drove had over 300,000 and was still running good

Like 61K...guy was a truck driver and barely drove it, hauled a camper with it and a tri axle, 7.3s wernt in pickups untill 89.... I'm almost postive on that maybe 88 but all older is 6.9 I know a buddy has one in his and hauls everything with it but his is a 5sp this is auto

I had one and put 230,000 miles on it.. if the glow plugs are good.. it would start in- 10 degree weather.
82 scrambler ,blazer frame ,small block.It runs everything from 33's-44's....83 cj7.full size chevy axles..48 inch terra tires.. 83 cj7... purple. 350 chevy toyota axles,37 inch boggers..have fun and keep the rubber side down.. Swampy

my buddys got one loves it 20 mpg and pulls everything he wants.... only problem he had was if you suck in water the motor goes boom! lol  but he rebuilt it cheap and still drives it!

yea i wasnt saying what year the 7.3 were put in i was just saying that i liked the 7.3 better but the 6.9 are still a good motor way better than the chevy 6.2

Well I have a 6.9 with a ZF 5 speed & tcase if ya need it I got the 7.3 Turbo & do not need it now. Let me know

the 7.3 came out 1988 bought one that year.  before you buy glowplug solinoid check the glowplugs frist. if you do not know how, hook a test light to the posi side of bettery, unhook the wire on the glowplug touch the top with test light if it lights up it is good if it dose not light up it is junk. the biggest thing with 6.9 are the heads cracking.

LOVE THEM!!! I've owned 2 86's with the 6.9's and I loved them both. Good mileage and will tow anything a powerstroke will (just not as fast! loll). Head over to Oilburners.net and you'll find a ton of good information. I'd recommend a manual bypass switch for the GP's as well.

Only one I have drove is a buddys 85 wd f350. I hauled a goose neck with a scrap load in to the junk yard.The gross weight was 19,780lbs . Thank god the truck had the 4sp manual or else I don't think it would have done as good. Top speed was 55mph to the floor but it did it.
