ok so today  i was driving hom on the freeway and i lost alot of power from my motor unless i was running it high  rpm in which it started getting hot.. and i noticed i smelled oil buring so i stopped then my truck didnt want to start again it was running like poo  got it towed home looked under the hood and noticed there was oil comming through the pvc system and the breather cap  and it was all over..  i cuntined digging around i took out all my plugs and noticed  on one side of the engine 3 plugs were berent to crap and toast  but the other side wasnt as bad.... so 3 ok plugs and 3 toasted plugs i further did a compression check and al the numbers check out from that.. could from when i was running at high rpm been the reason that i had oil comming out the breather? it couldnt drain it fast enough maybe?  and what would cause half the plugs to be completely burned up? ( note i was using one heat range higher plug and i did some reading and found i should be actually using one heat range lower  >.<  my bad)  any thoughts would be great thanks!!!!

oil coming outta the breather is kinda normal. on an open breather(not pcv) there will be oil spots on the valve covers cuz its kinda like a vapor. i dont think id be worried bout that part. coulda overheated the plugs? ==idunno

yeah thats what i was thinkin its just odd that half the blugs were toast and the other half were decent... oh well i suppose ill see how she runs with stock temp plugs after i out it all back together lol

update: got new plugs cap rotor fired up but it sounded a little off took it for drive seemed fine got back smelled oil burining  and my buddy noticed it was leaking a fair amount of oil cant tell where from... took it around the block again and it died on me a few times got it back took off the breather and oil cap and noticed eith it being smoke or steam just chugging out of the holes... it doesnt smell sweet like antifreeze though.... am i in trouble here? i was thinking i fried the rings but this motor was just rebuilt over the summer.... wtf?

theres a video of it running  sounds terrible  could it be bad valves? or more likely fried rings... when i start it up it sounds like its got  a big ass came in it..

I'm not a ford guy but , sounds like it may have jumped timing. Find a shop that does free estimates.

Hitman89x

what do you mean jummped timing? and would that cause all the smoke and blowby im getting all of a sudden? ( i was reading some more and found that enough pressure in the system ( blowby ) can cause more leakage out of the rear main...

Sometimes a timing chain will get slack in it and will skip a tooth on a timing gear. This could cause the valves to open at the wrong time and cause exhaust to escape out the breathers. If this was to happen you would get the same blowby out both sides of the motor. This is just a suggestion, Like I said I am not very familier with Ford's.

Hitman89x

hmmm sounds  like it could be that... thanks for your input something to deff. take a look at.. do you know if their is a way of checking this without tearing down the front of the engine?

ok so i ripped my engine apart insearch for the issue... and i have found nothing so far.... >.< the piston rings all look fine, bearings are good... head gasket was good.... but i did find the source of my oil leak.. it was comming from the dipstick  it was broken...  im at a loss...

Has to be your rings...better check again. Did you actually pull pistons and inspect rings? here is a nice little write up on blow by and what to check for. Carbon build up on the rings come to mind?

PS: When the motor was put together was the rings staggered properly?

KORNBREAD

Dude your fine. this is normal. just turn the truck on crank the radio up and forget about it................

Hitman89x

rofl i like that last post.. i wish it was so simple ^  and yeah rings were staggered properly and yes pulled pistons and inspected rings and they seemed fine.. i could be wrong.. ill have to take a better look 2 morrow

Was the block machined before rebuild? If so did they put the nice cross hatches in the cylinders? How did you break the motor in to seat the rings?

Jjay78

how low did your oil get? how were your intake gaskets? you said your head gaskets were fine, and your compression checked out ok, heat riser port at teh intake gasket leaking?

Hitman89x

engine was FULL rebuild machined and everything break in i did the 3k rpm for so many minutes then change the oil drive it around moderately.. then changed the oil and stomped on it lol  oil was not low.. intake gaskets bottom and top were in good shape... but so happens a ring on piston 5 the top ring was actually stuck.. would this one ring being stuck really cause that much  blow by?  ive never heard or seen this happen before... and how did i get so much carbon buildup from a fresh motor? just from driving it hard?

Hitman89x

also should i get a new ring? or just clean up the blockage?

hmmm UPDATE:   grabbed the piston that had the stuck rings.... took the rings off to find a crack in the piston where the rings sit very small but enough to stop the rings from rotating starts at the slot  where the oiler ring sits and  creeps up towards the top of the pison went just above the top ring didnt reach the top of the piston.. so im sure this is prolly the cause ofmy problems.. would you all agree? especially since it got worse as the engine got warm so the crack prolly expanded...  last questoin i have though is how the heck did this one piston crack? manufacture defect? or what? im also thinking i should prolly check the other pistons..

Yep I would say that is for sure your problem and I would have to say it is probably manufacture defect, probably wouldnt hurt to check the others but you probably wont find another bad one. What kind of pistons are they? Are they a cheap no name or something like TRW's? Reason asking is because if they are some cheapos you might want to invest a little money and get some good ones while you have the motor apart...here ya go comes with pins. locks and rings and they are forged.
