What heads do you have, what is your compression...these questions play a big part in deciding on what cam to get.

Big mutha thumping rough idle cams usually result in a very poor performance for street drivin vehicles...just letting you know.

Comp cams......look up thumper cams...gives you the super rough idle, but is streetable.

check your springs,  stock springs dont allways work with lumpy cams.

with stock spring you want to stay under 480 lift. any more will coil binded, spring are not strong enough.

idsay the same for a tq motor around 480 lift for a small block give or take a bit just ask the salesmen alot of questions and what your doing! youll be fine!

i like the mutha thumpr cams but i was looking at the rpms on all the cams and i come up with the edelbrock proformer it is a 488 lift and 1500-6500 rpms but it says i have to change alot of stuff do i have to or is that that just trying to sell stuff it says to run stock height pull rods and flat tappts so i should not have to change them right and what about lifters

jays85

oh the heads are 993  large chamber 76cc 1.94 intake 1.50 exhaust. The compression ratio is 8.5:1. if they are the stock crate heads with flat tappets

millser

if you put a new cam in id deffently put new lifters injsut remember your cam needs to mach your intake and heads if not could cause problumbs and will cause lake of tork and hp and some of those big cams have no or little vacume

jays85

would a 470 or 480 be ok you think only got the 3 vacs

If thats the performer RPM cam it says its starts at 1500 but its more like a 3000-7000 cam.  I ran one before in my FIG 8 car and ended up swapping it out for a Comp Cams Extreme Energy cam.  I think mine was a 1600 -5800 cam.  Incredible power and sounds great too.   Thumpr cams are made for the sound more than the performance.

yah thats why i want some input on this i dont want to have to change it out

the smaller you go the less you will have to modifiy or replace. 480lift reved out will still be hard on rocker studs. plus your gunna wanta change out the rotators, springs, long slot rockers, and such. your gunna want more compretion, than the 8.5 to 1 it wants 9.5 to 1 or better, but my steet rod would have performer rpm its a nice streetable cam that sounds good, but in the right setup can run fast jegs and summit will say biggest tq cam you can get. with out going roller. but most people say its to much for a street rod, BUTWHAT DO THEY KNOW, WERE GEAR HEADS!

I ran a .480 lift cam in my camaro for years on bone stock heads never had a issue sounds good and made good power!
