I have an s-10 on a full size frame, 10" of lift, 35 tsls  and a 305. I just upgraded the DEI with a pertronix race kit, helped but need more! I just picked up a predator carb, but it needs rebuilt.  That should help some.  Was told when I bought the truck last Nov.  the motor had a cam, lopes like it does but cant really tell.  Has a edelbrock performer intake and carb for now.  Anybody have any ideas on how I could make this run any better.  I want to build a motor this summer but money is tight right now.  I was thinking about getting some nice heads like dart or something like that so I could use them on the next motor. Also has a 14 bolt rear with 4.10 posi, not sure about the front. motor runs good but would like it to run better!  Does anyone have any ideas,  they would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks and happy boggin!

start by gettin a performer rpm intake, and how big a cam?
you do know a little cam will make a 305 lope,
what dose it have valve float at?
it probly dosent have vary much compretion, but if your gunna build a 350 then chose wisely on your heads. what works good on the 305 will be high compretion on the 350 then youll have to be carfull of valve clearence, with a big cam

x2, i would choose a bigger bore motor than a 305 for power, 350's are cheep easy to find and rebuild kits are all over for em and they have hundreds of pre packaged kits to choose from for em

Pull the 305 and drop a 350 in it and start from fresh, then you know what cam, heads, ect you have in your motor. It is real hard to make a motor run better that someone else has modded. 305 is a dam good motor but what ever mods you do to it would shine even more on a 350 or bigger. If I had a 305 in a 1/2 pickup for a daily driver I might mod it a little for even better gas mileage and call it a day, if it was in something I intended on wheeling, bogging, towing, ect it would come out with a quickness.

Then again I am one to preach since I just built a 4.3 liter ==roll

yea I really want to pull the motor and start fresh and Im gonna just cant for a month or two. was just lookin at little things I could do to the 305 to get me by for now. Really the damn thing turns on for a little 305, but its never gonna be enough . U guys know how it is.  So if I get a nice set of 202s will they make it run better or should I just run the 305 for now and buy the heads and save them for the next motor, cause trust me Im gonna have a motor built by the end of July.  I was thinkin a nice 355.  Whats your guys opinion,  Im new at building engines but have some friends that are gonna help, just want it to rip! Thanks for the input and tear it up.

any head other than 305 or 283,265. is the only ones that will work. the bore is to small from any vavles big than 1.88 intake. if you do get set of heads you be going for 8to1 comp. to 6to 1 comp. just running what you have. have you cheek the block # to see if it is a 305 or 350.

just checked its a 305 1980-1984

there right any more done to it and you will have to much money into it and parts wont be able to tranfer over, compretion wise. so your just gunna have to like it or put a bigger more radical cam. and love it for what it is.

x2, 2.02 valves will NOT clear a 305 bore

305 is not somethin you want to sink a buncha money into. Spend $300-400 on a used 350 and you got probably about as much power as what youre makin with a modified 305.. The 350 will respond to mods much better. Run the piss outta the 305 till it blows then get a 350 is what I would do..  ;D
