OLD SCHOOL

check for vaccum leaks, & the secondary's are known to stick open part way grap the secondary linkage near the shaft & try to manually close it & see if it idles down

Yup, also grab hold of the linkage where your throttle cable hooks up and wiggle it. Base plate is probably wore out.. You can get a rebuild kit for the base plate that has new bushings and stuff, if the butterfly shaft is grooved may as well toss it. Its very difficult to get the butterfly blades off the shaft without breakin the screws, so if the base plate has alot of slop to it may as well toss the carb and get another in better shape. The base plate is what kills these carbs. Has this carb ever ran correctly on this motor, or did you just now get it and put it on there..?

replace the q-jet with a holley or edelbrock.......fix other future probs that way too

thanks for the input carb was ideling around 800rpm's until we bumped the accelator to rev up it revved up and now will not come back down. Could this be because the base plate is bad? secondary are closed all the way. We noticed the primary blades are about half closed could this be caused by the spring on the choke not working properly? Idles smooth just idles high.
thanks again for the help.

Binding because the butterfly shaft bushings in the base plate are worn out, most likely

choke sticking?

Could be that or might be idling on the fast idle cam instead of the idle screw

nope
