Alot of factors to consider here? Rocks are stronger hands down then 1 tons, and anyone who says not doesnt know what they are talkin about. Anything will break if your not smart about it. That being said, there are differing types of toploaders and gmc's. As a rule of thumb, the newer the better. The toploaders have three main types, ball and claw, rezeppa, and u joint. not only the front shafts are different, but the rear shaft strenght and carrier strength. Gm's have different splining, depending on the year of the axle. Rocks and gm's can both be run dependibly with a mild motor and weight combo up to about a 54" tire without many problems, if you get the newer stuff. Steel quality is just better the newer you get. 2.5 ton in gm or rock is stronger in alot of other ways also, the knucles, housing and carrier are all way stronger. I say go rocks because of part availability and driveline angle issues. Only downside is the clearance needed for the front chunk.

mr nasty is wrong . i broke 2 housings how do you maintain them is  there a grease zert for that ? and those guys dont run their trucks like ohearn will. how many times do you see them at a backyard boggs or the mounds or pulling out their friends?aside from oc i dont . rocks are cheaper and stronger. 44 or bigger go with rocks the guys that say dont do it dont run their trucks like you will ohearn.

MR NASTY

I'm not telling him what to run I said imo rocks would be over kill and unnecessary weight to run a 44 inch tire. I ran a 60 in my truck with 44's for a whole year with a strong motor and never had a issue. And the reason I bring up maintenance is the guy I bought it from couldn't keep a shaft in it so I tore it down to find half the seals missing along with the inner spindle bearings. And I would bet broken housing equal abuse issues either from you or the previous owner. I'm not dumb and obviously rocks are not even in the same league as a 60 when it comes to strength. Just depends wether you want to go through the mud or over it because short of king of sling I've yet to see one of those heavy trucks do it.

how much for a 60 and 14 bolt  and then gears then you have to go through them . the rocks repack the bearings put them in . jmo . mr. nasty " abuse" i do abuse it thats what i built it for and it  didnt hold up but i know my truck is pretty heavy . i made it big because i cant afford to make it fast .i just think it will be cheaper for him in the long run

MR NASTY

I hear ya. I've seen you unit and definitely appreciate your guys big trucks. Many times I've seen you and herb go the extra mile to get people unstuck. At the end of the day its all about the budget. Wish I had half the money me and my brother have put in to start from scratch. Just one other thing for him to consider though. The bigger the unit the bigger the trailer and tow rig your gonna need.

MUD KING

Completley agree with the tow rig aspect end of it. I also likw rocks because of the upgrade end of things. I had 60 front 14 rear and had 4340 shafts all around and there superjoints into my one tons and finally got to the point where i was stripping a ring gear in the front everyweekend. Tried all types of gears and just was to much for the axle. Like the fact that i went to rocks and ran a 8 inch taller with 5 times the tread and pulled on dozers and rigs and never broke anything!
