1998 5.7L Oil Pressure Gauge

im having problems with my gauge cluster and the oil pressure gauge is scaring me. when i come to a stop, it goes way down but i really dont trust any of them dummy gauges. i bought a manual gauge today and im going to install it, but i havent found anything online that has any pics of where the sending unit is located at. some people have said that its by the distributor and some have said that its by the oil filter, but i cant seem to see either of them. does anyone have any pics of where its located or what it looks like?

On that truck it should be kinda under the distribitor. And has a 3 prong plug going to it.
i dont have a mud bogging problem, i got it under control

its about 2.5 3 inches long and black with a black 3 wire plug in it just under dist on back of engine ..if ya in front of truck looking back its should be going towards the pass side of motor .....heres a pic of what it should look like

pop the hood. hop in. remove the breather (better if its out of the way)  take a flash light and look right behind the dizy cap and to your right (towards the back of driver side valve cover). in that area you will see the unit right there. Easy cheesy.  did the same thing to the burban when I had it

also might want to run a manual temp gauge also. Those factory gauges are twitchy little p00 's.

awesome, thanks a lot guys. plan on running a temp gauge eventually, just have to get the oil pressure gauge now. i drive 47 miles one way and really dont want to find out that my oil pump went out when im somewhere that far from home....i really think its the gauge cause when it drops like that, i dont hear the lifters rattling or anything, but this way ill know for sure.

yeah its a very very common thing with the 88 and up dash gauges. besides the speed gauge id rerun the rest lol. They just like to freak out now and then. Get your self one of those nice chrome or black 3 way gauge clusters and mount it some where nice and your good to go.

When you can finally read your pressure don't be taken back if it is low, an engine builder told me before that if you got 40psi at idle outstanding and good for you however most motors only need 5psi at idle and 10psi for every 1000rpms, so if you have a street motor running at 5psi idle and get 50psi at 5k rpm's you are golden.

Just remember if you have one of these low pressure motors to let it idle for a minute or 2 when you start it cold so the oil has a chance to circulate..  ;D
