my suggestion is put a real temp gage in it, i know there are differant resistance temp sensors.. i had almost the same issue goin from 84 454 to a 78 400..
Unless it really is getting hot, thats somthing differant...

What kind of gauge? Did you use the same sending unit? I ask this to make sure the 454 doesn't have a warning light sender in it instead of a gauge sender to be sure.

Pull the thermostat and heat it up in water to make sure it is opening and closing at the proper temp. I have bought brand new thermostats before and had them bad right out of the box.

There are different headgaskets, or they were put on backwards,,, not letting coolant pass through to cool.....

Jjay78

their for that motor, and put on right

Look at it real close and make real sure the pump is turning in the right direction. Use the the temp sending unit for THAT TRUCK and use brass fittings to adapt it to the new motor if necessary.
