Is it a 1 piece or 2 piece housing?  It needs to be replaced with the same type of transmission thats in it

1996 only. 1995 is 1995 ONLY, '94 and lower won't work right with the vortec engine at all. This is because 94 and lower is OBD-1, 1995 they made advancements to the electronics in the trans that only work with a 1995 OBD-I truck ('95 is changeover preparing for OBD-II that came out in '96.). And in 1997 they changed the amount of bolt holes that mount to the transfer case AND made the the bell housing removable, so you're pretty much limited to 1996.

1996 fullsize truck with whatever engine that yours had (v6 or v8) is your best chance and being direct plug-and-play bolt-in.

I ran into this issue with my dads 96 tahoe.. its a 96 with the vortec 5.7, but it has a 700r4 in it. which didnt add up to me, until i remembered that it had a tranny fire and was previously replaced. so I have reason to believe the 700r4 should work on your 96 tahoe, since it does on his

The 700R-4 uses a kickdown cable, the 60-E  is electronic. So if your dad's tahoe has a kickdown cable under the hood, it was retro-fitted to work with the 700R-4, provided the engine electronics were taken care of, as the engine and transmission communicate with each other in OBD-II vehicles. They aren't completely interchangeable without making some modifications. If there's no cable it's a 4L60-E, as they both look very similar to each other.

Its a 700r4. I know my way around a vehicle, especially GM vehicles

Didn't doubt you, just stating that it isn't a full plug-and-play trans. If your dad's Tahoe has the kickdown on it, then the truck was modified for the transmission. That's all.
