ok so i always get this messed up. im trying to figure out what the height is and what the width is on the metric type. my monte has 205-65-15 tires on it. i want to go alittle taller in back and alot wider. idk what to get lol

Crazymays77

hard to explain on here. but here it goes. if you want to go a little taller and a lot wider then you would want to go with like a 305/55/15 or something like that. the way the numbers work is the 65 is a % of the 205 so if you go with a 305 it would be wider but then you would have to go down on the other number so you go a little taller. try this site out might explain what i am trying to say better. http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

u can see a visual comparison to the tire you have and what you want to go to.

montes look good with a 225 70, can run those front and back, or little smaller on front could be 215/65

245/50 in back  and 225/70 in front  I ran this on mine and look real nice and leaves a hell of a wide burnout mark  ;D

simply put   yes   but they are in direct relation to each other.  when one number changes so does the other, Idk how else to explain it lol

the 50 being height is measured as the height of the side wall so not over all tire height

the smaller number is the percentage of tread from the footprint, 225/70 the sidewall is 70% of the tread width, and i believe the 225 is centimeters.

feel free to correct, but im pretty sure.

the 225 is mm    and your right about the 70 being %

I was in the mood for some learning lol so here's the link it will tell you everything

The first number is tread width, called "section width." The second number is the "aspect ratio" of the width to the height, it is the percentage of width that is the height. Bigger first number gives you wider tread. BIGGER second number (aspect ratio) gives you a taller tire. That said, the aspect ratio changes with the width of the tire. A 235/75 will be a shorter tire than a 265/75, even though it seems they have the same height.
It is a ratio that is specific to that one tire's width.

Example: 235/85/16. Tall, narrow tires. 245/50/16. Shorter, wider tires (in general).

And you can use the conversion formula to convert all measurements into inches. 1in=2.54cm=25.4mm

Now I will show you conversion factors. The link doesn't fully show the complete conversion.

Example: 235/75/16 tire into Inch measurement:

235 is section width. So,

235mm X (1in/25.4mm)= 9.25in width. This is section width in inches.

75 is Percentage of section width. So

235mm X .75= 176.25mm This is sidewall height in mm.

Then, 176.25mm X (1in/25.4mm)= 6.94in. This is sidewall height in inches.

Since when measuring an inch tire you want the diameter, you need to add the 16in diameter rim, and double the sidewall height (since it is on both ends of the diameter).

(6.94in X 2)+ 16in=29.88in. This is tire diameter in inches.

Now assemble the two inch numbers and you have the completed conversion.

Results:

235/75/16 tire is roughly a 30x9.25-16.

You can do this backward too to get a metric tire that suits what diameter and width tire (in inches) you want on your vehicle.

Cool, huh?

You can go up to prolly 235 55.   That's what's on my s10 and they're pretty wide.  Even around a 245 45. Might fit!  Getting into performace tires there.  Around corvette size.  Z is high speed rated.  Ex: 245/45/ZR16.    And R is radial
