more info.... what trans and what you mean by it wont shift right, more detail please.     But I would start with basics.. check fluid level, color and foreign particles.  get back with the other details and I can help ya further  ;D

Tell Steven to check the kick down cable.  Make sure it didn't stick.  Thats what it sounds like to me.

Just checked the cable and its not freyed and still moves ok. Took it down the street and back real quick and it shifted into 2nd fine. Gonna change the filter and fluid and see what it does after that.

x2 with the detent cable did you do anything to it at all before it started acting funny? and changing the fluid and filter is a good idea, especially if it's not bright red

its not the detent cable since thats for it to kick out of od and down shift to lower gear.

I have Dealt with this problem with a lot of 700r4's  It is a common problem with them, there is debris that is stuck between check balls in valve body, or springs are getting weak,  this is not allowing enough psi to open valve at correct time thus making you go so fast to get correct psi to shift. If not takin care of soon it will not go any higher than 2nd gear.  I have rebuilt many of these and owned to many that have done this lol

Proper maintenance could of avoided this, scheduled filter and fluid change, weather it be you fault or po. It is a common thing that gets over looked along with t-case and diffs.  as I tell every one, you change engine oil and filter regularly but forget about the parts that take extreme abuse. but all to often to we buy a used vehicle and the po never did any of this and when you do the trans starts slipping or acting up since it  has gone 20 years with same fluid.

I would say try changing fluid and filter and pull valve body take out all springs and check balls and clean it up real good. and reinstall. If this dont work then it  needs a rebuild.

Fluid color should be Bright red not dark, dark means its burnt/ old.

good luck and hope it fixes it. any other ?? let me know    ++peace

your way off on your tranny info man, the 350 uses a kick down, the 700r4 is dependent on that cable for up shifting and down shifting

downshifting yes, up shifting Kinda sorta... You can run a 700r4 without the cable, It will still shift, shifting would just feel like its slipping real bad.  not what is described here shifting at to high rpm and to fast mph. I have rebuilt so many of these with the exact same problem and can easily tell the difference between the cable being out of adj. and this problem.

going to get  a new filter for the trans and fluid, and will check the balls in valve body.  ++peace

Sure u can run a 700r4 without the detent cable hooked up...... if u wanna smoke it.  The cable keeps the pressure on the cluths.  U can run a th350 w/o a cable but NOT A 700R4
