check fuel psi and go from there also if engine light is on get codes read, there's a lot of sensors that can make it do that, I had same problem on my xj and it turned out to be CTS and it was cutting fuel after it was warmed up.

sorry to hijack your thread, but i think i same problem that you have, because before my jeep died it did the same thing from time to time.

1988 jeep cherokee 4.0l

ok a few weeks ago i was driving my jeep just fine, then the next day i went to go somewhere and it wouldnt start.  so i thought it was the map sensor so i got another one from a junk yard (where at that same junkyard i seen a 53 flatfender pickup in with the rest of the junk) and replaced it and no go, so i then thought it might be the spark plugs because they were pretty nasty and carboned up, so i got new plugs and still no go.  sp i went and got some starting fluid just to check and still no.  so a long story short it has spark (it can jump about a 1/4/ to 3/8 gap) and it has fuel because i really smell it, now when it does crank over it trys to start but blubbers and then no go.  so im at wits end trying to figure this out.  now there are two things that im thinking it could be but not sure 1) that it could be the ballast resistor or 2) that it could be the throttle position sensor.

not all 88's have a ballast resistor, They were added mid year on the 88's, but if you do have one it would be on driver side inner fender, ballast resistor is probably not you r problem since it is for the fuel pump and if your smelling raw gas, then your getting fuel and therefore it is working,

both of you check wires and connections to sensors, Coolant Temp. Sensor, Crank/Cam sensor, Throttle Pos. sensor, also might be stupid but check Air filter if not done yet,  check all your wires for shorting,

thanks i was thinking about jumping it tomorrow

well i just jumped it and still no go, so like everybody has been saying that it could be the crank sensor thingy, i might have to try that.

Doing the same thing it was a few months ago Tucker?

bmwallace_88

my 94 4.0 had a similar problem, ended up being the Crank Position Sensor, Dunno if that'd be your problem, but thats what i did and for the 50 or so dollars i havent had a problem in 2 years with it, still use it atleast 4 times a week. And this was after a "shop" did 600 dollars worth of work to it to try to straighten it out. had it less than 25 miles and it still did the same thing. and the shop said it should of fixed the problem. which it didnt, took it back for another week, they didnt charge me this time, but i dont think it moved! lol try the Crank position sensor

uncletuck

im going to try that,im about to take it out back and shoot it lol

man ive been there alot with the various cars i've owned. the worst was probably the 1976 chevy i had, and it seemed it couldnt go more than a few days without messing up, got so bad one day i just started beating the hell out of it with a hammer... lol sold it for scrap.
