Roller vs Hydrolic

Hears the scoop, got a 96 or so 5.7 with factory roller cam that somthing in the bottem end locked up on, not sure what yet. Gonna tear it down this week i hope. Providing its rebuldildable what would be better all around, using the factory roller cam in it if it still in good shape or a hydrolic cam a grind or two above stock?  Its a 94 5.7 throttle body motor in my 94 chevy 4x4 daily driver/ bauger hauller. Just looking for any help guys. Thanks ==wgm

Not only less wear with rolllers but u can get a whole lot better cam profiles too. They maybe $$$ but its worth it IMO

Money is the reason I gonna stick with the factoey roller. Kinda a budget build on this one. Thanks for all the input guys.

well if money is tight, what about just getting a higher ratio set of rockers to get more lift and duration at the valve

But in some cases a nice set of roller rockers with a longer ratio will run around the same price as a half ass cam. Go to summit or jegs and compare prices so you don't have to jump from site to site. But both jegs and summit are rather expencive, it just a good place to look up parts.

Thanks for all the info guys. Tore the motor down and for some reason it wiped out half the bearings. Just gonna find a stocker for know to gat it back on the road, Gonna have to be haulin the bogger soon.  Just alot of money in just the machine work to get it ready to assemble right now.

a roller cam for that is not expensive, the litters are less then $10 each at parts store
roller is only way to go

I just had to price these out for the motor im rebuilding and at autozone lifters are 26 bucks each and cam is 250 bucks, the 10 dollar lifters are no longer made.   so your looking at 400 bucks for lifters and another 250 for cam = 650+ bucks    bud if you think thats not expensive  then id like to have your job lol

Im a bit confused, maybe I didnt read this right... You started saying its a 96 or so roller (vortec motor) and at the end said its a 94 5.7? (non vortec...)

If its a vortec, roller is the only way to go. if you jump up the profile though, the vortec heads need ls1 beehive springs, the stock springs are only good to like.480 lift. the lt4 hotcam is a common upgrade for the vortecs

Sorrry bout the confusion, meant it has the 94 heads and throttle body set up on it but the block is the 96 or so 4 bolt factory roller cam.

Strapless

Xjs3667. Get them at a machine shop. I got a full brand new set for a 96 lt1 for 150. 400 is not right. You can buy retro roller hyd. for that!

Yea I know 400 is crazy, but there was nuthing wrong with the stock ones that I could tell so I just put em back in, looks like im guna be firing it up by this weekend, so ill see how it goes, lol im always leary about the first fire after I rebuild, even tho ive never had one fail on me I still get butterflys in my stomach on first fire lol
