WARN M8000 problem

So I got this ^^^ winch. I have never had a winch befor and I can't seem to get it to work. I do not have the remote for it, but I can't get it to release the cable, or anything. Do I NEED the winch for this thing to even work?

I checked it with the light, and it is getting power.
I just can't get it to operate at all.

Yes I may be a  with this thing, but I'm just asking.
I called WARN and they didn't really have much to say.

i do believe you need the winch to do anythingyoull prolly need the remote to control the motor

If you switch it to neutral, shouldn't i still be able to pull the cable out. (I need to replace the cable)

I don't remember, but I don't think it did. It was last summer when I got it, then I just said to hell with it.

i have a 3500# winch and in order to get it to run off the truck i need a extra ground from the battery to a common ground on the winch plate as well as pos. and neg. cables hooked up.

So run a ground from the batt to an external part of the winch? And I tested the remote socket, and it is powered.
