My buddy put vortec heads and intake on an older 350. He put in a 4x4 extreme cam with. 480 lift. After he did all this work he said he had a rod knock and pulled it. I bought the motor cheap without hearing it run. Now my question is that I started researching these heads and almost everyone says Max lift on stock springs is around. 420 lift. More lift than that the spring retainers hit the valve seal. So would you think the noise he heard was too much cam or really a rod knock.

before I even got done reading thru your post thats what poped in my head then you mentioned the knock, so I would say that was the noise.

Well I know what people say and sometimes its not true so thought I would throw it at you guys and see what everyone thought. I know some guys on my block that have 350s with mild cams and 305ho heads that are pushing 500hp.

I agree with the springs causing noise due to being inadequate. However you will NOT get 500hp out of a 350 with mild cam and 305 heads. A true 500hp. is gonna take alot more than that and even harder on a hyd. flat tappet motor.

x2 I got almost .600 lift cam and 2.08 iron eagles with 12.5to1 comp and I only got 492 hp on a dyno! it takes alot more than you think to get them #....

but you do need different springs for them heads and that much lift..

its easy to check, pull vavle cover look at the spring. take feeler gages stick it in between the coils on a open vavle. look at vavle seal to see thay are smashed.

o I know that just said that because alot of people say stuff they have no idea about. I figure with my set up I should be around 350hp and 410torque
