if you are not a professional, you probably shouldnt truss your axle

the story for you...

after eating axle shafts like chicken nuggets last year, (7 broken axles, 7 unfinished races), i coined up and got a set of custom moser's. only 28 spline, so i wasnt expecting miracles, but i was SLIGHTLY DISAPPOINTED when they only lasted about 10 laps saturday night. ==pissed. to make things worse, instead of snapping like a stock axle, they twisted themselves to death, acting like a drill bit inside my spool. so...that is junk also.

so this morning, after 2 sad days, i called the expert's at hanson in minnesota. experts at derby rear's. before i got done with my axle description (28 spline full spool bolt in style with bottom brace) he asks what kind of jig i held the rear in when i welded the bottom brace on. the answer is none, had it balanced on 2 jackstands with my buddy heating it to temp while i welded it. he GUARANTEES thats my problem, and i certainly am agreeing with him now. i cant remember breaking more than 2 axles any other year, and i was sure it was because my car was heavier and more powerful than ever before.

so im waiting for an estimate on a 33 spline, full spool, trussed, with custom axle bearing eliminator's (scary right?).

did i mention im broke as hell? literally my phone might get shut off this week, lol, but i have a sponsor on my car that gave me $500, and he wants the car at the track.  ==np

Let me know what ya find out.  I know a few guys that went to the QP (Quick Performance) Ford 9" style, w/ 35 spline Mosers, theyve been having some issues.  Around $2,000 for a complete rear axle.  Im considering just goin to a reg Ford 9",Stock 31 spline,  put a truss on it, weld up the ford bolt pattern on the axle shafts and redrill for GM wheels.  I found a place in MI that sells Ford 9" mounting brackets to fit in 73-77 GM cars, for $66.00.
