Just thinking about going to a bigger gear since I just broke my front ring... Ok just wanted some other thought's on this.... I am running a L98 with mild cam to a Th350 tranny to a NP205... I have 1975 Dodge Dana 60 front and Dana 70 rear and 44x18.5 Ground Hawgs.... The axles came with 488 gears in them so I can go up to a 7.17 gear if need be but I am looking at a set of 6.17's.... What are your thoughts?

6.17s are sweet, had tractors with a set, they worked great

that much gear is easy to take the pinion teeth off. you only have 2 teeth touching the ring gear.

i had them in a lightweight jeep, putting them under a heavy fullsize truck ya might have a problem.

I would like a lot more wheel speed but I have never ran a bigger gear in it.... They are going in the blazer. I was thinking about breaking as well but was not sure..

people dont seem to understand that

going with a lower gear gives you more rpms and makes it easier to spin the tires but the tires wont spin as fast

say for example, with 4.88 gears at 6k rpms your going 50mph
with 6.17 gears at 6k rpms your only going 30mph

you can spin the tires easier and get more rpms faster but when your on your redline your tires wont spin as fast
That make scene. So wrong wording lol. I want to spin them easier.  Was thinking about 5.86's as well.... I have a friend with almost the same set up but he has 5.38 and he don't seem to have the spin I want..

get a 208 and stay with 4.88s  and it will way cheaper even if you have to pay to swap trans outputs..I ran 4.56s 208 cut 44 hawgs and with my little motor I could run 1st and alittle  2nd! with the bigger motor 2nd all day...

If I went to a 208 wouldn't I have to change the drive shaft as well?

cato699

My front has the plate on it so I would think so.

betterbeaters

depends on how you put the 208 on if you use a custom 203 adaptor the front should work and the rear will need to be slip yoke if the 205 is slip it may work!
