Ok, my family has been a pretty big collector of firearms and now that I just turned 18 I wanted to buy myself a gift. I'm having trouble researching laws for Michigan. I have been told that you have to be 21 to buy a handgun from a gun store, but only 18 to buy one from a gun show or private party. And if this is true, how old do I have to be get my concealed weapon permit?

Thanks.

You can be 18 to OWN a hand gun,  Must be 21 to Purchase, gun show or store or private party. Must be 21 to take the CPL class.

really the only way for someone that is 18 but under 21 to own a hand gun is if it was given to them in an inheritance, if that makes sense.

last i knew you could be 18 and buy from private party. but to buy from dealer you had to be 21. unless that has changed since i bought my last handgun. as for the class you have to be 21.

I take that back loll   you have to be 18 to purchase Private party, including gun shows. Must be over 21 to purchase from dealer.
Only way to own a gun under 18 is if it were inherited, and you would have to appeal to the courts.  must be 21 to take CPL class.

i doubt you could buy one at a gunshow under 21. they still run the fed background check at gunshows and the feds will probly kick it. if the dealer will even try as they dont wanna spend an hour on the phone with the atf during the show for one MAYBE sale.

find a private seller and buy from them. and then thats only IF you can get the sherrifs dept to give you a purchase purmit

Yes, I knew about inheritance under 18, that how I got my first one. But like I said, I was looking to buy one. I won't have a prob with any backround checks. But I also had another question. Would I be able to transport the handgun in my vehicle? Like what defends a case? A holster? Or fully closed?

Tell me if I'm getting this right. I can have my pistol in a case put anywhere in the car, but the ammunition would have to be in a separate location. Ie: gun in case, in center console, ammo in glove box. Gun unloaded of corse.

Because that's what I do with my shotguns and rifles during seasons. Gun in back, shells up front.

a friends daughter that is 13 just took the class. just can't get the license.

I guess I stand corrected again loll   but really what is the point of taking the class if you can't get the license untill later?  I understand to learn the proper gun safety and laws.  But I just waited untill I was 21 to do everything, my dad taught me everything I needed to know about gun safety. And I personally had no need to take the class before I was 21. I understand if maybe your 20 and your birthday is coming up, but like 13? really? Did she have to have a parent there just wondering?
