Jeep motor info needed!!! ASAP!

Ok, so the motor in our 99 jeep grand Cherokee just blew up, so here's my question, are all 4.0l motors the same? Had a slight rod knock that turned bad. Just looking for info so I don't buy the wrong motor.

All the Jeep 4.0's from 97 to I think 04 are the same.  I think the short block on the older ones is the same but not the top end.  Double check with someone that might be more knowledgable but I think thats how it goes.

my buddy had one go bad in his and he said 99-04 are same and its gotta be grand cheroke cause crank sensor is different so no regular cheroke.

short blocks are the same on all 4.0 except for the renix style. them are just something else lol. Crank sensor is different on grands but bolt into same spot and use same reluctor on crank... Heads are the same, the only real difference is the intake manifold, it is different than the older ones, but if you get a older engine just swap all your acc. and brackets and intake form your blown engine to the older style non blown up one lol this is to include injectors and fuel rail as they made improvements to them on the newer engines where it is a multiple pattern spray at a higher psi instead of the single stream/pulse injectors.  I know all this because these are all the upgrades that we in the xj world like to do to our older xj's   the newer intake will work with the older style accessories the only real difference is the power sterring pump bracket has one bolt that doesn't line up to the manifold, easily corrected by fabbing a plate up or something.....

ok I'm rambling now so your answer is yes the ollder 4.0's will work(except the renix ones) just swap everything over from blown motor to replacement

Sweet, thanks guys. Now for another question, where's the cheapest place to get a 4.0l motor? The one I had lined up is gone so now I'm looking for one. Going to put a ad in the wtb section.

I seen em goin pretty deceent prices on craigslist.... usually in the $200-300 range
