I just replaced the starter in the tracker went to the mounds twice. started fine both days and a few days here and there. Today I went to start it and it kicked hard and started to grind again. The flywheel needs to be changed but I put the starter on there and it was fine. could it be that the flywheel was beat up and it just took a bit for it to beat the starter before it started this crap again? I plan to replace the flywheel soon and hope to get the starter replaced since i have a lifetime warranty on it. but would like your input to why its doing this. thanks

BigFrank

on sams truck the flywheel was out of round  soo the starter would engage in some spots but not in others was making a sound like a peice of angle iron in a wood chipper  his was bad enuff it would bust the end right off the starter    ==offtopic  i have a new flywheel here

Crazymays77

i have a new flywheel. i got it when i replaced the starter a week ago under warranty. put the starter on it so i could pull it out and take the plow off so i could pull the trans and change the flywheel but it didnt grind at all so i left it. maybe the flywheel took this starter out. both getting changed this weekend if i have time. would like to find someone to help me change it out.

BigFrank

if its warped or out of round it wont grind all the time just when it hits the bad area  soo if it catches in the right spot no problem engine starts no noises  have someone crank the engine while your under there watching the starter  if it  moves away  i  would say the flywheel is warped   or take a jumper wire and hit the solenoid and see what it looks like when the gears mesh

Crazymays77

k ill mess with it this weekend see what i can figure out. thanks

id come over and give ya a hand but im only on #  372  of my project list  ;D

i figured the problem out. the starter bolts are a little short and the knurl isnt long enough to go where it should be. I turned the head down some and now it works fine. I am trying to find them a little longer but there metric bolts so i have to look hard.

with all the starters i went through i got to have some extra bolts layin around. how long and what diameter. of a 350 but should still work on a 4.3 maybe
You can only go as far as your truck will take you

Crazymays77

there metric threads. I found some bolts getting them today.

Yeah they don't even clear the starter now. I modified them so they atleast go into the last hole of the starter. Hope tohave new ones today. Might end up redrilling and tapping the block and put helicoils in for 3/8 starter bolts

That was going to be my suggestion.
In need of a yank strap?  PM me... I have 'em!

I'm worried the helicoils won't stayin or something hate to make more problems down the road. I'm gonna see what I can do before I go that route.

if u put red locktite on them they wont move but i wouldnt drill the block unless u pull the motor and have it on the stand  u wanta be perfect with the drill man  but u just got this motor dont start drillin on it yet theres a reason the starters are doin this its gotta be a part that was swaped off the old motor

It's the bolts there too short. I have it working now but I don't know if its for good or temp.

Swampthing

are you using full size starters?  If so, do you use the bracket that goes from the starter to the block?
82 scrambler ,blazer frame ,small block. It runs everything from 33's-44's....83 cj7.full size chevy axles..48 inch terra tires.. 83 cj7... purple. 350 chevy toyota axles,37 inch boggers..have fun and keep the rubber side down.. Swampy

Crazymays77

Yes and no don't have it. Never had this problem with the 93 block it had 3/8 threads this one is metric bolts r shorter plus I think I fixed it.

Swampthing

I use stock starters on all my toys, used to have a big problem with starters. since I started using the brackets, I have changed 1 starter in 6 years.
