chevy 2500 hd 6.0 help

I just bought this truck. It has high miles but no lights or anything. Runs like a champ. But my oil pressure drops sometimes not always and it drops to zero and the light comes on and tells me low oil pressure.  Im thinking its the oil pump or from what I heard id the check ball in the pump. I want to replace the pump
So my question is. And ive heard several different ways to do it. How can I get the pan off?
1 do I have to pull the motor??
2 do I have to rotate the front axle??
3 can I just jack up the front and let the axle hang down???
anybody have any experience with this I could use some info.

Options.....
1 pull motor
2 you cant just swing front diff out of way, so unbolt it and drop it...
3 the front will still not hang low enough if you raise it off ground since front diff is bolted to frame

If your a what i call a squirrelly type of fellow and can work by feel and no sight and can squeeze into tight places....you can lower the pan and squeeze hands in there and r&r the pump.....this is very messy and hard to do...if you drop a bolt or socket in the pan you cant get it out unless you do option 1 or 2

Either way i would suggest doing rear main seal if pulling engine and input seal on trans as now is the time to do it since its already apart......but if just pump is being replaced option 2 is the fastestand easist to do...

are you familiar with the LS style motors I don't believe you need to pull the oil pan to get at the oil pump. They are driven off the crank behind the balancer, you need to tear down the front of the motor. I could be wrong but I don't think so, you might wanna do a little research.

Sounds like a typical 6.0 probly needs can bearings

To change the oil pump you need to remove all front dress, and lower the oil pan about 2-3 inchs to get to the oil pump pickup tube bolt, then remove dampner,front cover then pump. on reinstall you will need a new crank bolt and oil pump pickup o-ring. the most important thing is oil pump to crank sprocket being centered/alignment and front cover being perfectly aligned to the dampner and block. there are many tips online for doing it without the alignment tools or you might be able to borrow the correct tools from a machine/race engine shop. You might want to contact Stan at Engineered Victories. He might have the correct tools. I hope this info helps.

And yes sudden loss in oil psi is usually cam bearings in the ls motors especially if its fluctuating up and down, also u didnt mantion year but theres a tsb out from gm about their guage clusters being a pos some guages short out and do whatever they want....

I would tap in with a seperate oil pressure gauge  and double check pressure before any repair

This is a 2002 and when it droped down and didnt come up right away I could hear the lifters clattering and starving for oil. I never saw anytbing about the cam bearing but I will look into that.

That's exactly what my 02 HD did. 156k on it. She probly needs can bearings.

hmm  mines getting close around 140k miles an 02  always on rev limiter   thanks for the heads up  .

my 01  6.0 has 203000 on it and except 4 the rear seal leakin it runs great and only rattles at start up runs 60psi on the gauge at 70mph only byTch is the gas gauge works when it wants to but ive been told they have a ground on the back of the dash that causes the gauge 2 fluckuate at times and its had a ruff life since i bought always pullina trailer or something
