I has a question I'm thinking about rebuilding the motor in my truck vs selling the truck

My question is how much would it cost to rebuild one? Not have one rebuilt but rebuild it my self?

My dad has built a lot of motors so experience isn't an issue

How much would a basic rebuild cost?

Or like a mild performance rebuild?

I would plan on switching the tbi heads for vortec ones

Another question would porting an polishing the intake and heads really be with it?

Thanks
Matt

If your going stock it will be cheaper to buy a reman long block

Building yourself is fun, but not really cost efficient.

Yes by all means if that's what your going for build it. I've built enough of them to know you can almost always buy more motor than you can build.  Someone's lose is always someone else's gain.

My last one cost about $1000 all together plus time.

Bought the engine $200, tore it down, had a shop clean the cylinders up $40, didn't bore it, had the crank polished $25, new front and rear main seals $20, new felpro gasket set $40, new ARP head bolts $60, put new flat top pistons $140, new rings $25, edlebrock intake $80, new rod $30 and main bearings $30, new high volume oil pump $25,  mild cam $120, gear to gear timing $40, and a set of cast iron ported heads $100. Doesn't sound like much but it adds up quick.

So if you already have the engine and are just going to do a stock - low end of mild build, you are looking at the $6-800 range easy.

I think theres something in a can now adays that bumps up the compression, and another product in a can that seals up the leaks, and yet another something in a can that stops smoking .

Then you could put some rattle can on it and call it a krylon rebuild , with approx $30 invested in those amazing products...it should look new and run great....I think some of the stuff even comes with a money back garantee

I'm just goofin .... Chevy 350's are a dime a dozen ...look around enough ...bet ya find one that runs good for $50-$100 bux

Good luck

Have a short block for sale, all the machine work is done and is punched .030 over..
pistons/rods/crank all there, needs a cam and top end... I've got $300 in it, you do the math on the rest.

oh, by the way.. did I mention I have a short block for sale ??? !
