Depends on what I'm welding if it's nothing that needs the strength I weld down but if it's structural I weld up.

Tips would be

Don't wear sandles

Make and eat bacon before you weld , so you can get used with the correct sound

always be sure to vote when loging into wgm

MIG and TIG you push the heat, stick you pull
Vert welds from top to bottom or "downhand" are generally frowned upon due to the lack of penetration. It's good for thin steel, 1/8" and under, possibly 1/4 if it's not  structural. Thicker steel that needs to be strong should be done bottom to top or "vert up,  up hand".

I like to pull, I have always been taught to pull mig, tig, and stick, and push with oxy/ace.  and bottom to top for vert. welds,

now this is all to say that your welding under ideal conditions, some times you have no choice but to do the opposite or stop in mid weld and  change positions and start the bead again, if you know what you are doing and adjust your speed and rig for welding opposite ie: pushing instead of pulling or top to bottom the weld is just as strong, its just out of the normal and it is always human error that makes these welds not as strong.

OMG stop all the weaving. Set machine to how you weld - your personal travel speed. Hot as the work will allow. Always uphill, never weld downhill unless it's paper-thin metal. (Speaking of wire welding here, stick is different)  Push whenever possible.

Its fine, just try not to stop so much if ya can.. It helps me to mark the crack I'm welding with a chalk so I don't lose sight of it and end up having to stop because I've wandered away from it  ==lmaoo

Here's some more MIG welds on some I-beam and large angle iron.

Weld through the corners without stopping, make tie-ins elsewhere - excellent beads
