nv4500 transmission questions

Is there a difference between the nv4500s that came in GM trucks and the ones that came in dodges? Would a cummins to nv4500 bell housing bolt to a GM nv4500?

Depending on the year the bellhousing is interchangeable either directly or by modifying a couple holes. The input & output  shaft size &  splines differ also, just make sure you have the right clutch disk and driveshaft yoke for the one you are using. Also worth looking into the overdrive shaft fix, the nut backs off if you pull over 12k or lug it too much. Someone makes a splined piece  that goes between the tcase and transmission that prevents the nut from backing off.

The SM465 never had that problem............then again......they didn't come with OD........but they do have a nice creeper gear.

If you get a 1992-94 GM trans 1st is 6.34:1 (vs sm465's 6.54:1) you're splitting hairs there matt. lol

When I drop the burb in low range 1st does about 1mph @ 2000rpm

Side note make sure you use AMSOIL Severe Gear 75w-140 transmission shops and the ole trusty internet will recommend Syncromesh, which is the incorrect fluid, nv4500's have some sort of carbon coated syncros and the syncromesh will damage it. GM had a part # for their fluid but it's no longer in production, I got the AMSOIL tip from someone who works in a durability testing facility, it exceeds GM recommendations and actually runs a few degrees cooler in their desert testing.

I have an sm456 in the truck currently, but I have yet to find a cummins adapter plate for the sm465

I think somebody ( a company) makes an overdrive unit that you can bolt to the rear of some transmissions. Not sure if that includes the SM465 though.

Even if they did make one, it would probably be more expensive than finding a NV4500.

Then again................if this vehicle is strictly going to be a mud truck then it shouldn't be a concern.
