Pulled a guy out of the ditch this morning. Made sure the strap was nice and safe, and went easy on his car. Pulled the guy out onto the pavement slow, and he kept coming and backed right into me. Luckily, most of the damage was to his caddy, but still, learned my lesson about being Mr. Nice guy.... next time just keep driving.....

i live on corner so anyone get stuck in my ditch i just sit back and watch them figure out how to get out and i usually wait for them to beg me for help after seeing my sami or other toy sitting on the driveway and i usually depend on the driver... if it just a 18 yrs old kid i say 20 bucks dawg....for driving recklessly ya know  and if it older couple i usually waive that 20 bucks... so

I used to do recovery also, had the same issue w/cops. then, after 20+ yrs of truck driving and the roads packed with foolish 4 wheelers (reads: any vehicle with 4 tires) I came to the relization that, if they're in the ditch they probably put themselves there...   they're no longer on the road and a hazard to my undercarriage/paint/chrome/drivers license/insurance co. etc...

I should ammend this statement -
Any body with children in the vehicle, I'm stoppin
and yes, it does depend on the area I'm in - in remote areas I will still stop and assist.

loll i'll only pull out friends or people whom i know, if i dont like them, MAYBE ill hook up the strap around the bumper(or other easily torn off equipment, such as a tierod, tire, cv shaft, or something else of that matter) and "accidentally" tug on it a bit hard ==roll

pulled some kids out a few years ago in the burb. they had that sheezy plastic rope and some ski rope tied around the bumpe of an exploder. the exploder couldnt get em out so i handed the car owner the clevis and told him to hook it to what he thought was strongest, i didnt want to rip something off so i gave him a good point to hook it to. got him out in 2wd after draggin him 30 yards through the ditch till thecar could get over the embankment.  it was fun and it feels good helping others.  i asked a cop about that last weekend when i help remove a tree that fell across the road, he said he never heard of such a thing as tampering with a accident scene or what not but said some cops can be jerks.

I believe the law states that if there is no property damage or personal injury you can extract them.  On the other side of the coin I've seen cops get pissed because a person left the scene of an accident because they were extracted by a kind soul.  Back in my tow truck days I would call all recoveries in to the authorities just to cover my butt.  Most of the time when a cop comes out the driver is going to receive a ticket for failure to control their vehicle.  I have worked some snow storms where the authorities wanted me to remove the vechicle even without a cop present because there were just too many calls for the police to respond too.
