my 79 400 sbc is gonna be runnin 10.5-11:1 compression ratio. is there a cheap starter that could turn that over easily? maybe one from a deisel motor cuz they have higher CR? what does everybody else use for higher compression?

a stock starter will work fine that's not really that high. ==2cents

bigmud44

lots of people use mini off later gm. allstar makes mini good up 18-1 comp for little over$100

MR NASTY

Summit 140. The 400s are know to snap the nose cones off at that compression. Try to fing one that doesn't have the aluminum nose cone that may help.

nope he just wraps a rope around the balancer and hooks the other end to the back of his tow rig n takes off.

Kyle

so does that mean i can use the starter from my 92 chevy 350 on it? itll all bolt up and i wont have an issue with the teeth on the flywheel??

Some had different flywheels... 153tooth and 168   168was the most common.. most automatics and some manuals...  i believe the 153tooth was for some of the smaller manual trannies ???  not 100% on there

You'll see the difference.. the less # of teeth the larger they are..... most starters should be close to the same up til around 2000    not sure after that ???   after 96 or so they ran the mini starters... same torque.. just 8lbs not 18lbs

Buy a gear reduction....  summits pretty cheap... or get an autozone 18pounder and GET A STARTER BRACE!!!!

searched starter brace and this was the first link that came up....

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/NAL-354353/  $10 on summit for a starter brace... i've seen them as cheap as $5 places.. but not usually in stock from what i've seen

that first link tells how to figure out if its a 153 or a 168 tooth, so thats reall good to know!
and i will def pick up a starter brace too thank you for the link!

and is the gear reduction somethin thats just bolted on/in to it pretty easy?

MR NASTY

Gear reduction refers to the way it transfers the power. Usese gears much like a transfer case does. You have to buy a gear reduction starter you can't add it to yours. Imo I would just get one and be done. They are sealed units so you don't have to worry about filing them with mud. Take far less battery to operate with is good even if your battery is pretty low it will start your truck.

put a stock starter on it , you will be fine.  lot cheaper , less hassle

MR NASTY

Obviously the stock one wasn't less hassle if he's been threw two.

MR NASTY

I've used to. They either snap the nose cone off or roll the bushing out the end of the starter.
