i got a 1980 chevy with a dana 60 front with 44, i had to replace gear box on it so i went to cross over steering and got a 2wd gear box hooked it all  up and it wouldnt move no more then a inch then it lock the pump up and the belt just spun so i made sure it was tight and it was then did it again still did it so i got a brand new one put it on and still did it so got a different 4wd gear box and went back to stock steering and it turn a little better but still does it anyone have a answer for this

homewrecker john

did you get the lines crossed some how?

redneck ohearn

no hooked them up the same way when took off but it did that when i got the truck soo ill switch them and see tomorrow

Does it do it both ways or only turning one direction? If it only does it turning in one direction your pitman arm is not on center with your gear box.

redneck ohearn

thats it all the gearbox had there own pitman arms on it so i dont think that its funny sometimes it turns both way and then all a sudden ti stops even when im driven it its still hard to turn it

glowworm

if you have a steering stabilzer make sure its not bad.
I got your jeep thing........Now it hurts when I pee

Pump could be bad as well, have someone turn the wheel back and forth while you have your hand on the pressure line and see if it is getting pressure when it stops turning.

redneck ohearn

no cant be that its a BRAND NEW pump from advance auto but ill try everthing you guys think whats it could be i just ran out out of idea on what it could be

With the front axle on jack stands and truck turned off does it turn back and forth freely?  It should be fairly smooth here, before even worrying about the pump.  If not, take the draglink off pitman arm and make sure gear box isnt binding.  The teeth on worm gear can chip, break and bind easily.  Make sure each knuckle turns back and forth freely too.

Raise the front end off the ground, and with the motor off, turn the steering wheel back and forth all the way from lock to lock while you have a buddy watch inside the pump, sounds like it might be full of air. When it stops burping it should be ok, fill it back up with fluid. Otherwise, grease all your fittings real good, and if you find a fitting that wont take grease, that might be where the problem is. Make sure you dont have a kink in one of the hoses. Otherwise, most likely its the steering box. ;D

ok i did this right before i had to go to work, i jack the truck up and turn the key so i could turn the wheel and it turn easy so easy i could do it with one finger then started it and move it back and forth a couple of time work like it should lowerd it back down started acting up again

Pump is junk or you got a sticky valve. there may have been crud in the box you put on and it could have jacked it up.

cnoswalt78

mine did the same and i drove it forever thast way get musles or put a new pump on it! you got some garbage in one of the ports and it aint gunna come out so replace it.

As Jeepinjohn said also U joints binding will cause all kinds of funky steering issues, I had a thread on here a few years ago about my suburban I thought it was death wobble. When I turned getting on the freeway for example it would be hard and then it would just give and shoot me back and forth almost losing control...very scary p00
