Ok I have a 99 ranger. I put manual hubs on it. So when I engage the 4wd it locks in sometime I do have to back up a bit but it's when I turn the 4wd off I have problems. It still is engaged. I have to back up to unlock it. I shouldn't have to with manual hubs should I? Last night I was driving home in 4wd stopped turned the know to 2wd and it still took off in 4wd until I backed up. I did notice when I had the right front tire off and locked the hub in I had to turn the rotor back and forth then it locked in same thing to unlock it. Could that be the problem?

bud had auto hubs on his, think he messed with them and they worked

Crazymays77

Yeah I still have the auto hubs here but idk of there any good. I like the manuals don't have to deal with vacuum. But I don't understand y they won't disengage when I unlock the tcase. Thinking its a bad hub or something but even if it the hubs are Locked in the tcase shouldnt be supplying power to the front right.

Crazymays77

Unless something in the tcase is bad and when I back up it releases pressure for t to unlock the rest of the way.

check your  wheel bearings  and  ball joints.  sometime  when there under presher they wont unlock  or  lock.

just  a  thought.

do you  have  push putton 4x4  or is it a shifter on the flour

ELECTRIC shift T-case?????......for a 99 I am guessing it is.  There are too many problems associated with those (FORD, GM, and Dodge).

if the case is still engauged (with the hubs unlocked)...........then its something internally in the case thats not unlocking

With fords you always have to backup to disengauge the hubs, atleast all off the fords I know of bronco 2s and rangers some fullsizes too

It's a knob on the dash so elec tcase. New lockouts new wheel bearings. I can deal with it just wanted to see if anyone had an idea what it could be. By the manual I shouldn't have to back up to unlock it.

yea it worked great and those years of  rangers were all ment to "shift on the fly" so you should never have to back up to unlock the hubs

Ford and GM AUTOMATIC locking hubs offer from 1982-1996.......required you to back up to disenguage them......because they were mechanical, and operated only when the T-case was shifted into 4wd, allowing the front driveshaft to turn and engauge them.

Manual hubs do not work that way, once unlocked, the main spring takes pressure off the gears allowing them to retract..............there is no need to back up once you unlock them.

Most Vacum operated  (non locking hub) 4wd trucks are the same way once you shift out of 4wd, you dont have to back up to disenauge it.
