You wire it the same, the 4th wire which is green is a ground, just ground it to the frame of the hoist, :)

If your saying the generator has a 4 prong female and the hoist has a 3 prong male?    then you need to either buy a 3to4 prong connector, which are real pricey,  or just buy a 4 prong 220v wire and plug, you can get this at home depot, lowes, aco, etc.  for around $20. the wires hook up the same as the three prong, white, black, red, the 4th wire is green it goes to the ground on the hoist. use a self tapping screw or put around a bolt.

On 220, red and black are hot, white is nuetral, green is ground. Everything used to be 3-wire, only the 2 hots and the white sort of doubled as nuetral and ground. Now there is a separate ground which is green. 110 has 1 hot and 1 nuetral, the black is hot and the white is nuetral. Green is always ground. Hook up the red, black and white on the plug and the green goes to the frame of whatever. Run all 4 wires from your new plug that goes in the jenny to the hoist. Hook up the 3 you normally would, and find a spot on the frame to hook the green wire to on the frame of the hoist. IF YOU ARE GOING TO WELD ON THINGS HANGING FROM THIS TYPE OF HOIST, YOU MUST HAVE A NON-CONDUCTIVE STRAP BETWEEN IT AND WHAT YOU ARE WELDING ON. THE ELECTRICITY CAN AND MOST LIKELY WILL BACK UP THROUGH THE CHAIN/HOOK AND FRY IT AND MAYBE YOU TOO.

like above u i said  i will run wire later on but not yet  prolly by summer ...

ok i looked again and the generator is a 4 prong twist lock plug  i couldnt find a plug that already has wire on it but a plug alone where i have to wire to it myself .

and the hoist has 3 wire  but 2 black and one green which i m sure green s ground for sure and what r the 2 black ones  they says L1 and L2  ... so i m stumped kinda unless somneone can draw me a diagram?
i ll be hitting menards again to see if i can find something better or here

I would treat the 2 blacks as red and black, the green as a white.

Captn. J

so u re saying i shd get a 3 wire with ground for the 4 prong and wire it up and  the ground goes to to frame of the hoist?

yea the 2 black would be treated as one is red and one is black and green is ground, I personally have never seen a 220v twist lock plug, i've only seen em as 120v  if you could get some pics it be great,  also you said you couldnt find a plug with wires, they are usually in the like the dryer or stove accessories aisle.

There is a 125 volt heavy duty rv outlet/plug that looks very similar to a 220/240. Make real sure you got the right voltages in mind. I plugged one in to a 220 outlet and burned up everything in my trailer years ago ==roll

xjs3667

^^^ x2   make sure its 220v    I mean being that the hoist is 220v, if the plug is only 120v then I guess you would just pop the breaker on it.

if its 120/240v   there has to be some kinda of switch to switch it then.... I really dont know on that,  my generator has a different plug for 240v

120/240 means it can be wired either way depending on how many hots you use. 240 = 2 hots, 120 = 1 hot. Its not that complicated, just think of it like truck electric, its just AC instead of DC but it still works the same.

true  but since its on a jenny and being the same plug, I would imagine it would have a switch, I couldn't see someone making a generator that you would have to rewire the plug every time you would want to change from 120 to 240??
