Alright, so I have a 90 chevy socttsdale, std cab 8 ft bed, and It has the IFS, and I want to lift it, the lift kits for it are your know 1000 to 1500 bucks and the biggest you can buy is 6 inches, so has anyoine heard of anyone putting leafs on the front makes it a stright axel like the earlier chevys? cuz then I could lift it higher and it would cost me a whole lot less, and it would be a rougher ride, but still could drive it everyday... or anyone have any pics on how someone lifted the IFS themselves.... bigger then 6 inches???

Its called a SAS   solid axle swap, and yes it has been done and it is done a lot, there is a lot of info it just do a search on chevy sas,   and I thought scottsdale p/u were in the 70's? then changed to silverado?  I could be wrong tho just never heard of a 90 scottsdale,

sas is 1000x better than ifs imo,  and worth the time and money. if I were you dont go wasting your money on the ifs lift kit.

simple put

ifs lift- gets you a limited amount of lift, and with any lift you run bigger tires, and with bigger tires = more stress on halfshafts =breakage =more money= getting mad and no fun

sas= unlimited amount of lift options and axle options= biggest tires you can afford= lots of fun lol plus it is so much stronger, sure you will eventually break somethin but not like ifs

Yea I have an 83 Scottsdale 3/4 , So I know about the Solid axle , And sounds good to me I think I am going to do it, And Yea its a 90 scottsdale, According to the factory tags in the glove box, i looked it up on my GM tech website, and It was built in 1989 and rolled out the pontiac assembly plant, lol with a a scottsdale package, I just dont like the term Heavy 1/2 ton, i think it was stupid idea, to put all 3/4 ton suspention and 1/2 6 lug axles, but hey I didnt make it i just fix , modd and drive it... lol

If you do it you have to have a ford front axle because your tcase is on the drivers side or change your tcase to run a Chevy axle

wait so because, I have a chevy I have to put a ford axle why cant I flip the chevy axle, ??? Thats weird, And i have a 373 gear in the back now. do I have to put a 373 in the front?
and if I do the ford, can i use the drive shaft I have now?
II

ice87

You just can't flip an axle. When Chevy went to ifs it switched to driverside tcase. All Chevy straight axles are passenger side. And yes you want to match front and rear gears

I was doing a lot of research and I can use dodge axles and they are 6 and 8 lug , unlike ford is 5 and 7 lol. So I am going to do the sas, as soon as I get my hands on some 3/4, 8 lug dodge axle, I will deff post pics and update anyone who wants to follow in the garage projects.....

Lol. P.s  Ice87  I was joking about the flipping the axle...lol

Thank god. I would say I agree go ford 3/4 axles high pinion will help out driveshaft angles.

a half ton ford axle can be swapped to 6 lug very easily, all ya gotta do is swap out the hubs. and u can use any for axle, a high pinion will just be better for ya in the long run, i did my sas with a low pinion and i had to take the die grinder to the pinion yoke to clearence it for the steep angle at full droop but u can also just use degree shims to roll the axle downwards to help with pinion angle. yes you can use the driveshaft u have now, you just need a combination ujoint cuz d44 yakes have a smaller cap size than the chevy's ifs. SAS is the way to go, little more work involved, but worth it 10 fold in the end

full size dodge axles are not 6 lug theyre 5x5.5 same as full size fords. dakotas and durangos are 6 lug but theyre ifs too. All older model 8 lugs are pretty much the same anyway I think. Didnt ford change the 8 lug pattern sometime in 2000ish?

Pvtspencer101

Yea I was mistaken, the dodge are 5 x5.5 but I was looking at dodge 3/4 8 lug with the 4.10's and I think i am just going to do both, front and back, i think i would be better then getting a ford 5 lug and changing the hub, also I wanna run 38x16.5x16 so I figured the 410 would help turn the tire a little better then the 373 thats in my Chevy IFS now... I am going to do some slight mods to the motor but not much, I got a whole new exhaust, headers, and i got 305 heads, with a little heavier springs in them and the OE chevy stamped steel rockers.... Do to the fact mine is a TBI i am looking into a new bolt on TBI upgrade to 670 cfm... and a high rise intake, and I want to know if the high rise with the TBI would make it any better or i guess if it would be worth the 2800 bucks...lol I figured some where in the high 300 low 400's for HP... you know port and polish I am going to get as much as I can...

Imo id get rid of them tbi heads if your looking to make any serious power

Pvtspencer101

i got some 305 heads off an older chevy, I do dont believe they had TBI back them I am pretty sure mid or late 80's is when they came out with the 1st yr TBI...

II

ice87

305 heads aren't any better they just have smaller combustion chamber

Learn something new everyday I guess... Thanks Man I guess, I have never really modded a TBI motor... so I am going to have to do some more research...

you can also adjust your fuel psi on your stock tbi to get more fuel, the fuel pressure regulator is built in to the housing the injectors are bolted to, and it is adjustable :)

Modding a tbi is the same as the  older engines its just those heads don't flow. Get a set of vortec heads and and intake (has to be vortec aftermarket intake bolt holes are different) a nice cam and ur not to far from ur hp ur wanting and it'd be fairly affordable
